hi all.
i've got a mate who is looking at buying a hilux but the steering box has a bit of a leak. just wondering if anyone knows how hard this would be to fix and roughly how much it might cost


any help would be awesome

you can pay some one about 500 if you remove it first, or you can do it yourself its really easy to replace all the seals and they cost only about $25 all up.

so its really nothing to worry about if the rest of the vehicle is good.

if you need me too i can find an online rebuild manual with good pics, i think its on surf forum.

i did mine.

the most common reason they leak is a pitted input shaft, if this is pitted (from trapped dirt and water) too badly you need to get it rechromed or it will not seal... this would push the cost up another 3-400.


BUT - mine was leaking and pitted and i though oh f... anyway there is enough room on the input shaft to put 2 seals into the housing, just one after the other. this means the second seal sits on 'fresh' shaft so all wear and pitting is a non event.
