G'day guys,
I just heard through the grape vine that they are going to outlaw large tyres on road..... ie 35's when 31's are standard... is this true??? is there a way around it ???

There is a National Code of Practice for Light Vehicle Construction and Modification has been around for a while, and is slowly being implemented by the state transport authorities...

Here in the ACT, our transport authority already bases their rules on the NCOP, with a maximum 50mm increase in tyre diameter over original factory fitted sizes for 4WDs. And we can not have anything at all engineered as legal outside of those rules.

Other states such as Queensland seem to have even stricter rules, I think they only allow a 15mm increase in tyre diameter for both on-road cars and 4WDs.

Each state decides which parts of the NCOP they will incorporate into their own rules, and how, but it seems most are moving towards it. Someone might be able to fill you in on Victorian plans to implement the NCOP.

There are other rules in the NCOP that limit tyre sizes, such as only being able to increase tyre width 50% over the widest available original factory size, and only being able to increase the wheel track by a certain amount (50mm for solid beam axles, 25mm otherwise).

So, depending on which state you live in, 35's in place of original 31's are already outlawed, and will probably be elsewhere eventually (soon?).

G'day guys,

Mmmm Poltical track closures... regulations tightening in on tyres...two "P" plates... revenue raising speed cameras... parking officers that mark tyres sidewalls damaging the work that custom builders put in..."Whats next??? flatulent police.. fart too much and we'll tax you for it.. lol.... They would probably call it a green house gas emission "levy"....

If you think I'm being negative.... you're probably right.. I'm tired of beurocrates ruling "MY" life... ;)

See, they are already illegal anyway. Ive only every been pulled over once with about 20 odd other cars. They dont even have a clue what they are looking at the laws themselves. Its just a big joke, solong as you do things right and safe. There are no problems unless you get into a smash, inwhich they still dont know what they are looking at. Im sure if you put big tyres on and realise the brakes arent big enough. You'll either upgrade the brakes, Change down tyre size, or upgrade to a truck that can handle that size.

So what happens if you car has been approved with 35" tyres ?

Does the NCOP retrospectively change this ?

I have seen vehicles plated in QLD with 35" tyres (pre 1997) when it was allowed under certain condition, so what is the go with this ?

From what I have heard on the NCOP is that if a car/4x4 is already plated/engineered than they are still legal UNTILL more mods are done that require a mod plate/engineer's certificate at that stage the vehicle has to comply.

I may be wrong but that was my undertanding of what I've read.

I have read this too, the new laws aren't retrospective. So if you have something engineered and approved, they can't make you comply with the new laws and rules. Which means if you can still get your modifications approved, get them done now.

Yep you heard right.. parking a officer marked my mates hotrod tyre to see when he moved it and if it was moved within the correct parking time limit..
Firstly you'd think if they had to do this they would use chalk or somthing like it and only on the tread which comes in contact with the road... but in this case.... NO they used a premanent white marker because the particular officer's chalk had run out..... three hours of careful scrubbing removed the marker.. a complaint with the local council was made and the officer was..... repremanded.....thats it!!! no apology given......

as to my question... if i get a engineers certificate i should be ok .... right?...... or take the chance... I've put disc brakes on that have brought the old girl into the 20th century so other than correct tyre clearance's I should be ok.

If you get all your mods certified by an engineer it is 100%, so long as it is done before the new regulations come into place.

Spot on, and you can go 25mm smaller but I don't know why anyone would want to do that.

Withe the new rules coming in Qlder's will be able to increase up 50mm in tyre size but if you choose to increase tyre size you can't do a body or suspension lift.

Here Here. If the government spent a few bucks on places to race cars, go offroad, allow some mods so we can tip a few bucks into our cars and keep the economy ticking they might not be dealing with so many stabbings and drunks in town. We'll all be necking each other through boredom at this rate.

g'day,
pgs4wd... here in vic we have a real problem with drag racing on the streets.. a few years ago the local government tried to fix this by opening sandown raceway to "leagal off street drags on a friday night... it worked well for a little while , then someone realized they could make extra revenue.. up go's the entry fee and bingo... back to square one.... the illeagal drags were back...

so the moral.... moneys talks...

if you think I'm a pesimist your right.... when has the government EVER thought ... about the little guy...
