Trying to work out which hose to tap into with gauge and controller.. Also does anyone know what standard boost is? What should i boost to? [truck engine/drivetrain in great condition with 215 on clock].
Stock turbo boost is pretty low 6-9 psi.
Disconnect the wastegate and it maxes out about 14psi (manifold) with a stock turbo. Mine has been running this boost for years and has over 240K now, towing camper trailers etc.
You will also need to take out the pressure relief valve in the manifold and block it up with a blanking plug. These leak all the time anyway even at factory boost.
You will need to think about the intake (airflow capacity) and the exhaust (capacity) to handle extra boost
Extra fuel will help but your EGT will skyrocket (irrespective of boost). An EGT gauge is essential if you are going to play around or you will knacker it real quick. Put in a boost gauge while your at it.
Turning up the fuel with that screw adjusts the wide range of fuel. (you will get a smokey exhaust if too much) If you want extra fuel when on boost only you need to mess with the boost compensator (remove shims from underneath)
An intercooler will also help dramtically.
BTW I fitted a Garrett BB & IC to mine and I it is great for extra power and driveability. New turbo was winding the boost gauge around to the stop (around 20psi).
I reckon it has double the power now.... gone from zero to double zero!

interested in your comments. My 2.8 runs max 10psi standard, so this is in line with your numbers, however am trying to get a bit more out of this engine without massive mods. Can you advise the size/model or even cost of the BB unit you have installed? I already run an intercooler, and engine is standard in every other way. I am looking at an exhaust upgrade from standard, currently at the 2.5" and 3" decision gate - any comments on which way to go?

The turbo I had built a couple of months ago by Precision Turbos. They used my original housings and fitted up a 350hp GTBB unit to it. That way you get the benefits of BB but everything bolts up as standard (no mods req) Cost me $1250 all up.
I found that my turbo drain is in a bad spot on the block and more oil goes up the drain than down. It splashes off a big end and backs up against a web in the block. Best to relocate the drain to the sump or the BB turbo will spew oil everyhwere. You will need a restrictor in the oil feed line to the BB turbo. Easy to make with a brass screw threaded into the banjo bolt and a 0.8mm hole drilled into it
I run an exhaust blanket on the turbine housing to keep the heat in = more boost. Takes a bit longer to cool down though.
My exhaust is a Beaudesert jobbie which is 2.75" one muffler ( I hate droning exhausts)
My intake is 3" mandrel bend SS316 all the way to the Donaldson air head. I custom made the filter housing out of 150mm PVC pipe and use a K&N filter
I was the same as you just wanted to make the unit go a bit better without spending heaps. The new turbo is a ball tearer and worth the money and fiddling about. It is certainly cheaper than slipping in a 4.2 if it does what you need it to

this sounds great. I reckon I will do this. Its not expensive and from the sounds of it, could be done in stages, say sort the exhaust out first, then rip the turbo out, get that modified and then re-instal with the mods for the oil return.

You will need the boost controller with the BB turbo. With the original turbo it doesnt really matter
If your interested, my turbo (the whole engine too) will be for sale soon and its only done about 1200kms. You can test drive it in the car at the moment.
Im still using it while I sort out my new 4.2 engine, so wont be available for a few weeks yet.

injectors set to 155ats
3" dump/exhaust
custom plenum chamber( velocity stacks inside)
3" IC pipes
Big FMIC
Powershot LPG injection
Snow Performance Water/meth injection
Big kn airfilter
Exedy xtreme clutch
Puts out around 250hp/500nm. My latest modification to it was water injection and I`m very happy with the power increase.
