Supercharging 1.6 Carby
I'm finally wanting more grunt to spin the 31's. Engine swap, seems too much work when I don't have a hoist and welder and stuff. So i thought a SC12 Toyota supercharger would be a better option. Has anyone ever done this mod, or recommenda any other type of supercharger? Any major headaches?

i ran the 1.6 with sierra carby, a huge change from the 1.3, like MILES more power... then i put a weber 32/36 on and gained more power again, and have since gone MPFI (jimny top end with vit injectors)... theres a further power increase (not huge, maybe 5%) - but the real difference is in the torque... i reckon theres about 30% more torque than previously. The engine is also much nicer to drive now, needs less revs and pulls away in every gear.
So my vote would be interference extractors (4-2-1 pipes) and EFI to get the torque going =)

No high range reduction available, only low range via Xfer gears.
Unless it's like mine that came with 4.6 diff gears & swapping in 5.1's from an early vitara has brought it back to standard gearing on 31's

Even still - i drove a stock EFI swb vit on BFG 32's (no lift just guards cut) for a while and on road it still performed just fine - takeoffs at lights etc just meant holding the clutch a tad longer - by all other means it didnt exactly "lack power" - but could have done with lower gearing for drivability.

Yeah its a Vit 1990, so I think I have the 5.1 diff then. The gearing doesn't bother me too much on road, infact I think it's better in first and second speed wise, (might get rockcrawlers for 4L tho). But... It just bogs down sometimes because of the reduction in torque at the wheels. And hills just kill it in the arse. So do good extractors make a noticable difference? How hard would the EFI job be on the 1.6 carby? And are EFI parts easy to find?

The low gears had life span issues from memory, they were soft to help the tiny little burr cutter like pinion survive and not shatter .. so they wore quite quickly.

Fair enough. The 'heavy duty' clutch has survived 5 years of abuse so far and still feels ok. Might as well just run it into the ground. Then maybe the EFI conversion or webber carby with some extractors for extra grunt.
