Whats the trick to geting the Alternator out?
Ok so I am changing my alternator on my 89 GQ and am having trouble removing the alternator from the bottom mounts. How do I get the Rod that goes from the front to the back on the bottom out? Or do I need to remove the bottom mount from the engine as well? Any help would be great.
TB42 alternators come standard with a single bolt that runs through to a threaded end (on the front) just undo all the rest of the bolts and keep winding it out completly, it'll have a fine thread so feels like it takes a while. Wiggle the alternator a bit as your undoing.

Thanks guys, i undid the 4 bolts holding the lower mounting bracket and it literally fell off the Alt It was the plastic looking spacer on the Alt that was stopping it from coming free in the first place. Ok so the old one is out and I just need to put the new 120A AEA unit in. At work at the moment so it will have to wait till tomorrow. Thanks again.
Yes it is the easiest replacement Alt that I found after doing a bit of searching, No modifications needed. Straight swap. Twice the power output of my standard unit (60A) and has an extra vacume outlet blanked on the top hose that may come in handy later. Total price delivered from Brisbane to NT $550 roughly. AEA have many Alts to choose from highly recommend them as they know their sh*t. Give them a call, found them recommended on this as well as other forums. Good luck.
Heres another option for an upgrade! Has been in my GQ petrol wagon for over 5years and still going strong. Can run 6 100watt spotties as well as two 110watt high beams and other acessories at near idle and still be fully charging. Minor mods need to it is a small pulley, longer belts, spacers made to suit the leg gap difference in the bottom legs and grind a bit out of the leg on the manifold under the airbox and a new plug.
Note this can be pulled back off and old one is still able to go back on!

mine is mounted quite high on my TD42 on passenger side almost level with water neck, still attracts mud tho :-( lol
