When will the first KOH style event be here in Australia?
Moderator: evanstaniland
Thanks for that Tony,
Is it possible to run an event with more people and less dollars - getting back to that trials idea or early Baja - turn up, set up and run etc
"I only ever competed for fun. I never gave a shit if i won or lost if there was prize money or not, if there were spectators or not or if the media was going to be there. I built a buggy to have fun in and stop destroying full bodied rigs. I didn't build it to win prize money at every event i went to."
Hope You didn't think I ment you - in my previous comment - I know you do it for the love of the sport.
cheers bru

To run it for less money with more people you would first need someone who wants to do this for the love of the sport. This is how W.E.Rock started here in Aus. But then you need the support from others to run the event. Marshals, judges people to look after gates and pit areas, People to just run around doing all the little things that need to be done during the event, medical staff just to give a few examples. This is where every other event really struggles no matter if its Rock Crawling or winch challenges. Everyone either wants to compete or wants to watch.
For me the hardest thing to organise for any event has been these people. We had a few guys that allways helped out no matter how big the event was but it was never really enough. And when we asked for help usually at least half the people that put their hands up never turned up to the events or were not interested when they got there.
We all talk about the love of the sport but when push comes to shove most people are in it for the trophies, the money, or getting their pics in magazines. Everyone talks about "not racing for sheap stations" but then want to stand around arguing over trivial things just to put them in front.
couldn't agree more.
In the logan river trials club they had a problem getting observers.
Un observed trials sucks and the same people were at the top each week - (no one saw that, i'll mark a clean).
They insisted/voted they/we wanted an observed trials club.
So they have a points system - that the ccda should adopt
you need 10 points to renew your club membership.
Observing yourself for one event is 3 points, (bringing someone else to observe on your behalf was also 3 points) bringing in tape once is 1 point etc. I observed nearly every event - as you can learn just as much as riding - then I would swap with a mate at half time and do all the sections flat out. Yes my points were worse cause I couldn't walk each section properly but I learnt to ride better because of it. I still went from worst in the club when I started to top 3 of my grade at most events.
They gave 1/2 price entry for the next round for observers too.
Why can't the drivers marshal saturday and race sunday (run 2 groups), if you cannot marshal etc then you cannot race.
The other option is 3k entry which has its own cost prohibitative problems,
I will go out on a limb and say a koh style event for standard vehicles would be a hoot. The terrain is easily found and the difficulty is still there.
I took my little bro's stock zook to LCMP and had an absolute ball.
You can buy a dirty old gq and race for 2k, then as the interest increases the buggies can have their day.

So who takes the blame when someone kills themselves because they rolled a stock Nissan at 150km/h.
You really need to think things threw a bit more.
Straight away a stock class will not work because you would need approved roll cages fitted. Hence cost and people won't be bothered to get a proper cage built. Then they would have to be fitted with harness's seats etc etc.
REGO??????????????
[quote]Here is as close as we have had in Aus to a KOH style event. Its only a very short course but it "should" have attracted the vehicles that would be needed to run this style of event. It has been run 3 years in a row so far-
First year- http://www.outerlimits4x4.com/ftopic918 ... ght=canyon 7 vehicles turned up.
Second Year- http://www.outerlimits4x4.com/ftopic108 ... ght=canyon 6 Vehicles Turned up.
Third year- http://www.outerlimits4x4.com/ftopic150129-0-asc-0.php 3 Vehicles turned up.
Now this event was not open to Buggies. But i imagine had enough intrest been shown i beleive they would have opened a class for them.
Myself and a couple of others approached LCMP re entry of unrego vehicles and was told definitivly: NO
Not like vehicle are legally registered ANYWAY,
WTFU!
Thank god for Superior Allignments!!

right about now seems about the worst time in the last decade to try and get a new and fawkin expensive comp off the ground IMO
Re: When will the first KOH style event be here in Australia
Any updates on this style of racing over here?
I think OBC property would be idea for this style of racing, so you can have high speed sections and rocky sections also.

I'm hoping to bring my KOH car to Aus next winter, and I'll be wanting to race it against someone!
Hardest part will be finding someone crazy enough to sit in the navies seat.

Re: When will the first KOH style event be here in Australia
in the build up threads there seems to be a lean toward class 8 racing showing people want to go fast. Would it be possible to run a buggy under a cams class and over time adapt this to a KOH style race tacted onto another cams event like next weekends texas 200? you may find guys racing under a cams class are also looking for a change and assume rock crawling is only a slow event.
I would agree that there is little to no support here in Australia for offroad events in general. I have a friend that invested close to $25,000 in an event, was promised the world buy alot of people now has to sit back and cop the flack that ruff mentions above. He was under the impression if he ran an event close to brisbane/goldcoast he would get alot of day spectators and park numbers would be up. If he offered good prize money competitor numbers would be up. There are probably several reason's the event didnt pan out this way and was generally unsuccessful, but i think the main reason, and the reason MMM does so well is the need for comps to be run like a business. You cant organise and compete in an event.
I personally would like to see this style of event, i wouldnt enter, i wouldnt build a car but i would love to watch.
