i've got a set of marks 85% reduction gears that i started installing in my GQ transfer case today. as i bought these from secondhand (new but never installed) a while ago there was no instructions and i'm not sure if there is a piece missing or not.
my question is, in the pic below there is a thin steel plate with teeth around the OD, red arrow pointing to it, between the bearing and gear. i'm guessing this is called the backlash eliminator. there is also one on the larger gear too. the replacement gear in the kit came with the plate for the larger gear but there is not one for the smaller end of that gear.
should there be one in the kit, or is the new gear is installed without it? it seems weird as the original gear has a plate at either end.
can anyone shed some light on this?

Reduction gear install question
I bought 2 sets of reduction gears in 2002/2003 from marks, neither had instuctions.
The plate your looking at is a noise suppressor, it has a different amout of teeth from memory to the drive gear. It applies pressure to the contacting gear to stop the gears rattling. Markd gears don't have that part.

thanks for that mate.
do you know why the larger gear on that shaft comes with the plate but the small one deosn't in the kit? also that bearing that you see in the pic had a thin shim under it in the housing. in the marks kit there is spacer that has the same ID and OD of that shim. does this go in the housing under that bearing to make up the difference of not having that plate?

cant remember about the spacer, have a measure with the new and old gear sets and see if it adds up.
You may need to use the shim also to set bearing clearence/end float. I can't remember exactly, its been a while.
There was a group buy of BBM gears "Rockhoppers", maybe one of them can help as they are essentially the same thing. Or contact Marks.
