I have a hilux with a tired 22r and am debating about doing a recon on the 22r or transplanting a 3rz
I know the 3rz will give me more power but wonder how much will I notice
also how will the ecomony change
to complicate the question further as I run lpg most of the time this will negate the efficency of the efi so will I be better off in either aspect
if only a little improvement is it worth the effort of should I just recon the old engine

All Toyota alloy heads suffer from this prob. Actually most alloy heads suffer from this it not limited to Toyotas.Frankenyota wrote:Seen a few on gas with bad valve recession.

I was advised against running a 3RZ on gas, may have to check valve clearances more often?

Upper Cyl lube kits help to an extent but i would advise to keep an eye on clearences at least for the first 50thou till you get an idea on how often you need to check them.
There is no comparison between the 2 engines. I would not waste my money on a reco of the 22R. Its allways going to be a 22R. It wont be any faster or any cheaper on fuel after you reco it.
It would almost be cheaper to hunt down a 3rz that is not ridiculously over priced and jam it in there, even if you bought a rebuild kit and reco'd the 22r. hunt down a 3rz 2wd bellhousing, other than that its just time if your handy around the engine bay.
Can easily be done and has been done in a weekend.

I ran both the 22R and 3RZ on dual fuel. 22R only survived about 10thou before head was stuffed due to valve issues. 3RZ is running fine on gas, same power on both but that is with a gas reasearch system and haltech piggyback ecu. Gas research installer has done alot of 1fz engines, and said valve recession is a reality, but just check and adjust valves every 30 or 40thou and it shouldn't be an issue. Upper cyl lube kits don't help that much if you're checking valves often enough.
As for the power, no comparison. Hills that the 22R used to drop from 100kph to 60kph the 3rz holds 100 easy. Economy, not a whole lot of difference in my case anyway, they're both reasonably pityful considering they're 4 cylinders.
