I've only ever had one landy and that was a 2a way back in in 94. I've had patrols since but you know i have always had a spot for a lwb county or defender as a play toy, but you don't really see any around playing, especially up here in QLD. Compared to the GQ for strength, ease of modifications etc what can you tell me about the 110 county as I have seen a few around for the $8000 mark. What about the 3.9 izuzu motor. Just thinkin thats all

IMO the 110 is the most capable 4X4 OFF THE FLOOR.... some of the reasons you don't see too many playing are
- not huge numbers sold...most still touring vehicles....
- very, very, very difficult to body lift due to firewall
- which means in order to fit BIG tyres i.e 36"+ you need lots of cutting and quite a bit of spring lift...and this is on a reasonably top heavy sort of vehicle....

Saying all this, there are some EXTREMELY capable 110's running around

The rear Salisbury diff is very strong, the shafts are just crap..easy fix..
The front is as weak as any Rover front.......

And as for the Isuzu diesel....piece of crap...I will swap you a 3.5 V8 in exchange for it.... :finger: What a nice bloke am I :lol: :lol:

With a 2- 3 inch suspension lift and trimming the edge of the factroy flares you can fut 35's pretty easilly with some scrubbing.

As landy man said they are very tall and top heavy and do have a lot of body roll on softer springs,

Either Jack Macnamara or Maxi Drive to axles and the like and arb also make airlockers

It is a shame that there are not thet many seen out on the harder trails because the can be made very capable!!!

Go buy one and show us what you can do!!!

mmm thanks for ideas, anything i should look out for specifically? I am fairly open minded in 4wds, but i guess i have such a good run from the gq (which i will be keeping) and i guess i use it as the yard stick as it has been very strong and reliable, but i want something else as a carnage car of sorts. Plus i just like the shape of the 110's (heaven forbid i need help)

Would have to have twin locks and 35's. Wouldnt be used as a daily driver. I've even seen cheaper county's for about $5000 - $6000. Are county's any good

Im building a 110 at the moment. I wouldnt compare it to your GQ in terms of strength. Depends on the gearbox/transcase and Diff combo you end up running

The standard front rover diff is pretty weak ( Ive broken plenty) It wouldnt handle 35's without some mods or drive with a light right foot

G'day,

I'd love a 110....cut the arse end off it though. One problem with the County's are they have rear drum brakes.

Cut guards and fit 35's, I'd advise to take the original flares off and make new ones.

i'm building a 90" project using series landy panels. I mounted the body a good 3" lower than stock defenders to keep weight down. I have cut afair bit of guard, and have to tub the rear due to the 35's scubbing with still 2" more up travel.

If (I mean one day when i do) build a 110, It would be 2 door, arse end cut off, fuel tank mounted in back, turn it into a soft top or a ute, roll cage. I would pefer a 300tdi (but a 3.9 is good, especially Turbo), I would have a LT95, ARB locker rear, maxi axles in rear, probably use JacMac front locker and axles with conversion to toyota CV's and run longfields or similar. for crawling use 4.7 diff ratio's (probably use a toyota front CWP if they have a 4.7)

I'm a bit worried about getting one with the dif problems, cv problems etc. My intention would be to source a cheap 110 county & go from there but after seeing a mates rangie with an arb rear locker and the amount of axels he broke to would go the JAC MAC or maxidrive straight up, although after having claws offroad I don't know if a front locker would be required as I hardly use it in the GQ now with them on.Certainly a back one at the very least. The whole idea is to have a play truck sitting in the shed with the claws etc on it just to be used for the sole purpose of playing. Would changing to the upgraded axels in the JAC MAC / Maxi drive solve these problems. Also I want a diesel and have heard the 3.3 nissan motor goes in them. Is this true. Of course it would have to be able to turn the 35's so maybe the factory v8 is the go. Sorry to be a pest, but hey at least i'm lookin at a landie. I would still prefer one over a four runner as a play truck.

Dunno about the 110's, though my IIa runs a Nissan 3l diesel (ED30) and 5speed gearbox with the stocker t/f case. Now this is serious low range!
