FJ40 SHACKLE AND LEAF SITTING ON CHASIS
CANT SEEM TO FIND THE PROBLEM WITH THIS ONE. SHACKLE IS BOLTED TO THE HANGER AND TO THE LEAF. BUT SHACKLE IS SITTING ON THE CHASIS TOWARDS THE FRONT OF THE CAR. THE FRONT IS FINE THOUGH. WHAT COULD CAUSE THIS?
ANY REMEDIES?

Pic would be nice but sounds like your rear springs have inverted. Usually caused by incorrect shackle angle. Springs are probably too short. Get longer springs or get some anti-inversion shackles. In the meantime, CAREFULLY jack the chassis up and lever the shackle back to its proper position while lowering the chassis again. Getting someone to slowly operate the jack while you do this would be a good idea.
TRIED THAT YESTERDAY. SHACKLES ONLY MOVED DOWN ABOUT AN INCH. THATS IT. IF IT WAS LEAFS TOO SHORT. WHY WOULD SOMEONE PUT SHORT LEAVES IN THE REAR?
WHO IS THE GO-TO PERSON ON THIS FORUM FOR 40 LEAFS?
WAS THINKING OF GOING PARABOLICS BUT CANT SEEM TO FIND ANYONE THAT DOES THEM FOR THE 40.

Probably someone who had the stock leaves reset for a few inches of lift but didn't account for the fact that the more you arch the springs for lift, the shorter the distance between eyes. The result is short springs and inverted shackles.Hardzy wrote:IF IT WAS LEAFS TOO SHORT. WHY WOULD SOMEONE PUT SHORT LEAVES IN THE REAR?
Mate the causes for your problem could be many and varied but without a bit more detail (history of springs, description of shackle angle, did it happen going over a bump, do you know where the caps lock button is, etc) and possibly some pics you're not going to get much more of a response.
Im here for the sausage!
you need to do what Ray said and "unflip" the inverted shackle. Like he said be careful and get someone to give you a hand. Jack up the chassis. Use a long lever such as a heavy duty tyre lever or pry bar and slide it in and while the chassis is jacked up unloading the spring use the lever to flip the shackle back around. If you do not understand what we mean then you need to take your car to someone to get it done. Check your spring - it may have bent the main + second leaves when the shackle inverted. If this is the case then you need to replace the main + second leaves. You also need to work out why the shackle inverted. Best bet is to unflip it and post some pics of your springs and shackle angle.
ok thanks for the reply.
the car was bought off "ausdog" from this forum as a project. picked it up saturday with a rough as guts motor. new harmonic huge service. car is running sweet. fixed up all the wires which were going nowhere. and greased everything up. only thing i couldnt acheive was the shckles.
i will get some pictures on the weekend if i havent resolved this issue. but the springs were fine. nice even arc. all springs in tact. would the standard shackles on the rear be about 80 mm long?
