Gearstick hitting transfer stick on 96 model hilux

Post by wompy »

Hey, just wondering if anyone could help me. Ive got a 1996 model Hilux (solid axle front) dual cab 2.8L diesel, its got 2 inch lifted springs, 2 inch body lift and 33s inch tires.

The problem is when i have the transfer in low range, my gear stick hits the transfer stick mainly going from first to second which then knocks the transfer into neutral. Has anyone had this before? What could it be? i have rebuilt the gearstick with new bushes and seat and clip.

Have you put the shifter in the right way? Some cars can be put in 180 deg out.

You will need to bend the transfer or gearstick lever. Heat with oxy and bend. Check without the rubber boots on to make sure it doesn't hit the tunnel. May have to trim the tunnel.

Unless the shifter has allready been bent to suit the body lift there is no reason to bend it. If its a standard stick they should not hit each other. I think you will find you put the stick in back the front.

I pulled out the gear stick today and checked if i put it in back to front but its definetly in the right way. With all the rubber boots off and the transfer stick gear knob off the main gear stick will just clear it but ass soon as i put the knob back on the transfer stick it will hit, then its even worse with the rubber boots back on.

This is the second gear stick i have had in it, the first gear stick i had, had same problem. (replaced the first gearstick because the clip broke) Both sticks were the exact same bend.

Has anyone had this problem before, how much clearance are you meant to have between the 2 gearsticks, and do you normally have to modify your gearstick when you do a bodylift?

Thanks
