300tdi exhaust and coolers
G'day All,
been doing some small mods to my 95 300tdi disco. As far as engine work goes all I have done is the pump tune. made a big difference. now looking at other options to get abit more power for towing.
I have cut the rear quarters off the body and now need to mod the back part of the exhaust. How restrictive is the main muffler? I have a straight through muffler from a VM diesel Rangie I could fit, just wondered how loud it would be? Or Am I better off getting a 3" exhaust made up?
Also I was wondering what options for intercoolers I have? I have heard of getting the stock one gas flowed, how is that done? Also I have seen aftermarket coolers that fit in the original spot. or is getting a bigger one to go infront of the rad better?
Mainly after more low down power for towing. any other options (not too expensive) I should look at?

I did the pump mods on my 110 then added a 2.5" exhaust from the turbo back, no muffler or resinator its a little loud but not unbearable even in a 110.
I really noticed the difference when i did my pump, the exhaust i have no doubt helped and it sounds pretty good too
Make sure you have your EGT's checked too
There was a guy on AULRO who was making and selling coolers that fit into were the exsisting one is but had a larger capacity from memory around 30% not sure if he's still in the business someone who frequents AULRO might be able to chime in here.

Stick with a 2.5" exhaust, (There is a thread somewhere all about 2.5" vs 3" and the tdi engine gets no benefit going over 2.5") I have only a small straight through muffler at the tail of the pipe, ditched the centre one long ago. With a turbo it kills most of the noise, but Mr Plod and rego like to see a muffler.

2.5" mandrel should be fine unless you are really going to town with mods.
Do you have an EGT fitted? What does it read?
Do you have a boost guage? What does it read?
Where does the wastegate actuator sense pressure?
A bigger intercooler and/or a variable vane turbo (GT2256V I think it is) would both make a huge difference.

Yep thats the turbo Ben GT2256V, its the same turbo as on the TGV2.8
Another turbo option would be the TD04
Guessing by Guru saying not too exspensive a new turbo might be out of the question.
Guru Triumph Rover Spares sell a replacement cooler but its 700 beer tickets and they claim some real perfomance gains or the sell a full front mount from 940 beer tickets.

yeah not planning to change turbo's at this point. one on it is fine and I also have a spare..
what diameter is the stock exhaust? I though it was 2.5" guessing it's only 2 1/4"?
Not worried about the rego side of things. so might put the straight through muffler on.
I'm only worried about droning noise when towing on the freeway. otherwise noise isn't an issue.
Intercoolers look interesting. but thats alot of gain for just a cooler.
Haven't had a EGT on it yet (had a mate that is a diesel mech do it). I'm getting about 14psi boost (no guage but I did fit one to check).

Your boost is a bit low. Max should be 14.7psi. However I think the actuator may sense boost pressure pre turbo. Move it to the intake manifold and you will get extra power for 5 minutes work. Adjust the wastegate to increase the boost a bit more if you want as well.GURU wrote: Haven't had a EGT on it yet (had a mate that is a diesel mech do it). I would fit an EGT asap. You can then see what levels you are running, and you may be able to increase fuelling some more (especially after increasing boost).

I fitted the straight through muffer last night and drove around for awhile. 2 things I noticed. turbo spools up at 1800rpm. and now have no visual signs of black smoke out the exhaust (did have with old exhaust)
I wouldn't have thought It would stop blowing smoke with the different muffler.
The other thing I was thinking about the intercooler been clogged up. The car has done 280kms and I'm sure no one has cleaned the cooler at any stage. (the motor in it has only done 110000kms). I have the cooler from the motor, maybe I should clean and fit that and see if that makes any difference.
One othe thing. everyone I have spoken to says put a 3" exhaust on it. but you guys reckon only 2.5" why is that?
Thanks
