Just bought a HJ61 (12H-T)

Post by ianparry »

Hello everybody, I'm new to Landcruisers and Oz in general (got off the boat a couple of months back!)

Just bought a 1986 HJ61 and have a few questions for the wise ones!

She is in good condition and as far as I can tell pretty much factory spec apart from some air cusion bags on the rear suspension. I've got a file full of recipts dating back to the late 80's so am confident that she has been well looked after but I did buy her off of a couple of travellers who have spent the last eight months driving around oz in her.

The only issue I really have is that the engine is not pulling very well above third gear, I put the accelerator down and she just increases revs with little acceleration, with some playing I have found she will accelerate but needs some coaxing and very gentle increase in accelerator pressure.

Hope this makes sense to someone and hopefully will be a quick (cheap) solution!

Thanks in advance....

Sounds like the clutch is slipping.

Thanks RAY185, that was my first thought, bite point is right at the top of the movement.

Engine seems to be running smoothly though idles a bit fast but nothing serious. How much would I be looking at for a new clutch over here?

Well you'd have to shop around obviously but factor in a clutch kit, rear main seal, flywheel machine and gear oil and around 3 or so hours labour. Depending on what clutch kit you decide on it could get expensive. A standard clutch kit usually retails around the $400-450 mark while for a couple of hundred more you can get a heavy duty/performance clutch kit like a Clutch Industries 4 Terrain or Daikin Excedy (I would definately opt for a heavy duty one if it's within your budget).

Rear main seal around $20-$30?
Flywheel machine around $50-80?
Gear oil around $20-30?
Labour around $70-$100 per hour depending on where you go?

Just to give you an idea but like I said, shop around and ask people you know who is good to use. There are probably some people on here from WA who could recommend someone.

I agree on the heavy duty clutch kit especially if you are towing. After towing our van (2500kg) for 600/700k in a day then reversing the van while the engine is still hot had vehicle shuder with the standard clutch. No worries with the HD unit.

My clutch replacement including skimmed flywheel and HD clutch was around $1300 installed. Take care the FW has not been skimmed too much before. Mine had been and continued to warp. A new FW fixed the problem, as well as fitting an HD clutch.
