1hdfte chip exh cooler?????
I recently purchased a 79 series 03 RV tray ute factory turbo, im happy with the ute but feel its a little lacking in power, we also have a 2006 Sahara (turbo diesel) and it would flog the ute easily, i know its got more kw due to the intercooler but its also quite a bit heavier, just a little over 2840kg with full tanks and also being auto , the Sahara also eats the ute in the fuel run 9.5/10.5 to the utes 14.5 15.5,
what i was wondering whats the best way to get it going, ive been told chip exhaust intercooler????,
there seems to be a few exhaust out there, ive been told 3 inch mandrel bend,
same goes for the chip also been told a DP 34
and for room the intercooler seems like it might be a bit of a hassel,
is anyone running these options and with what type of results, any help would be great before i blow more cash and regret it

definatly do the exhaust and then the chip and it will be good intercoolers work very well they make a nice water to air one that fits under the bonnet,no holes to cut
wagon has a tottally different ecu to the ute that is why they go better
and also the ute is just a workhorse where wagons are family cars and people are more picky about them

If you are after an off-the-shelf intercooler kit, Cooma Diesel make one: http://cgi.ebay.com.au/Intercooler-Kit- ... .m14.l1262 or you can get the Denco Water to Air system http://www.dencodiesel.com/pdf/Fitting/ ... cooler.pdf
Best results would come from a complete package; exhaust, intercooler, and tune in conjunction with a chip. It depends on how much you want to spend, and also what sort of power/torque figures you have in mind.

I think they change the grill as there is literally no room in front otherwise. I know that's the case with older utes as we made some top mount intercooler plumbing for a guy to run a top mount as he couldn't get anything in front. Not ideal but he seems to be happy but he put it in to combat high EGT's and overheating in a aftermarket turbo'd 1HZ.
Intercooler alone will not give you much of a power increase but will allow you to safely tweak other things.
Exhaust will make a little difference, chip will make a lot. I have a 3" exhaust and DPchip wound up to position 8 of 10 (comes shipped at 5). It's in an 80 Series wagon with 35's and I can easliy get into the high 11's for fuel economy without running it like my grandpa. And there's virtually no evidence of smoke and my EGT's non towing have yet to exceed 450.
The ute will never be as powerful as a wagon version as there is more difference than ECU tuning and intercooler. The wagon has different pump setup, different injectors, ECU obviously and lighter pistons, which is also partly the reason for the intercooler.

gday mate i bought a 2004 rv 79 ute nd im the same as u it was lacking a bit of power so i just installed a full beaudesert 3 inch mandrell bent bolt on kit nd have heard alot of good things about the "tunit chips" they are 9 stage manually adjustable nd just to let u know i definetly gained some power out of the exhaust i also blocked off the egr (exhaust gas recirculator) and gained a little power out of it but mostly just got better turbo noise..
2004 toyota landcruiser hdj79 RV ,285's, polished timber tray, beaudesert 3 inch, dtronic chip

if i remember rightly. toyota released an article at toyota training explaining to us that there was an adjustment at the injector pump. for people that wanted a bit more power that were happy to use a bit more fuel. should try and find it. something about a boost compesator or something. cant really remember.

Thanks for the info, im know leaning towards an exhaust and the DP 34 chip, does anyone have rough kw power increases with these two mods,
also are you running a 1hd-fte?? or earlier 80s 1hdt in your 80s,
The 79 engine is different to the 100 version, and many internals carry different part no's.
I would stay away from any chip which wires into fuel pump wiring and stick with something that chnages what the ecu sees from the engine.
