Lokka clearance adjustment

Post by grazza »

This is a question for anyone with Lokka lockers...

I had a Lokka in my Hilux and it never missed a beat - I installed it myself and did not worry about clearances and I guess I was very lucky.

Now I have one in my GQ, fitted by a trusted mechanic, and under heavy load it unlocks with a loud clicking noise. This was after about 10 trips before I noticed the problem.

Now a friend, also with a GQ, is getting the noise and he has not had his Lokka very long.

We are wondering if we are justified in complaining to the bloke who put our lockers in or if this is a common problem with the Lokka - i.e. the clearances are set correctly at install time but after a little use they need to be done again (at no fault of the installer)

A different mate had the same experience but had to get his done after a couple of years and now it OK. (All GQ's which probably stress the Lokka a lot more than my old Hilux)

Waht do ya reckon?

I'd mention it to the bloke that put them in
As for only having them on small 4b's with no power and small tyres I have to disagree. We installed one ourselves in the front of my cousins petrol troopy about 3 years ago or so, the troopy use to run 31's then 33's and now it runs 35's and has never skipped a beat and the troopy isnt just a beach donkey we take it all through ormeau and everything

Ive seen one in a BIG truck... a guy i used to work with had one in his ford bronco, this thing was mad... had a 460ci big block and 35" tyres, he said he broke a little spacer ring in the diff lock, but just machined up another and had no probs with it for 10 years

just my 2 cents

did you replace the centre diff pin? if this is worn (even a few thou) then it can cause the locker to engage unevenly and not disengage properly (sort of gets jammed up.)

id get the guy to pull it out and check it out.

i had lokka's in the front and rear of my 60 series, and i have one thing to say ..................

FREAKIN AWSOME ! ! ! !

they worked really well highly recomend to anyone and everyone,

BUT BUT BUT not for a SWB suzuki sierra ! ! ! !
i twin locked my last one with lockrites, and terrible absolutly terrible,
very harsh on road, very hard to steer off road, just digs in the sand,
NOT GOOD at all

so my suggestion is to only stick to putting these in BIG 4WD's, or LWB at least,

In *theory* (not worn) the force "out" from the pin angle cut should exceed the force "in" from the bevel teeth angle cut.

ie - THe harder it driven, the tighter it locks.

Maybe the teeth tips are worn. Is this the version with 4 rings, or the 2 rings that engages on the teeth tips like the hilux?

Sounds like wear somewhere

I Had a similar problem. Installed the Lokka Myself. Didnt note the tolerances. Cost me to get it fixed. The Trush washers where warn and needed to be replaced to create the correct pressure on the diff. This is in my Gq.

And Jeeps are for hairdressers, p00fs and pyromaniacs.

Its been covered on here before, but the clearances in the locker need to be pretty close in order for them to work properly and stay like that.

I'd say there's a fair chance the installer just swapped out the parts and reassembled it without checking or adjusting the clearances. I'd be taking both of them back and asking for a "please explain", or see if he has recorded clearance measurements from the job cards.
