random hose from engine bay...?
random hose from engine bay...?
finally got the bodylift put in the zook took a lil longer than expected, but that's always the way.
while doing that i was checking thru the engine bay to make sure i wasn't stretching anything that i shouldn't while jacking the body up, and i came across a hose that was connected to the engine or carby somewhere that i couldn't see easily. the other end was plugged (looks like a bullet cartridge ) and just kinda sitting towards the back and top of the engine.
asked my mechanically minded mate what it was, and when he touched it the hose fell off.... we spent ages looking for where it was attached, but couldn't find anything. the hose was around 15mm diameter, walls maybe 4-5mm thick. no clamps on either end
the engine starts fine, idles, and runs.... but i'm sure the hose was there for some reason.... any ideas???

Plugged? Did it look like it was meant to be plugged? Or like a previous owner has blocked it up for some reason?
This sounds like the sort of thing that Christover would be able solve for you. He tends to spend way longer than anyone else i know looking at his engine and the underside of his car
Is it a 1L or a 1.3L stumped?
How long is the hose?

Ok, my first guess is that it is the vaccum hose that is used to activate the hot air / cold air gate on the on the top of the air filter.
Explanation:
When the car is cold, the vaccume hose will hold open the gate that is taking hot air from around your exhaust manifold, once the car gets up to temperature, the gate is opened and it will now take cooler air from where the battery is.
If i am correct - you will have a spot to plug in the hose on top of the round housing for the air filter.
Let me know how i went before i come up with some other ideas

nah, we looked there...
we were thinking vacuum as well, cos it's plugged, but couldn't work out where from. it's not from the air filter, all the hoses on that are in place. i'm pretty sure it was plugged into the engine somewhere under the carby, or possibly the carby itself...
next idea??

It's a cylindrical looking black thing that sits in the opposing corner of the engine bay to the battery (i.e. passenger side fire wall).
It's part of your emissions system, and when there is left over fuel vapour from the engine it travels along the hose into the carbon cannester... Then (i think) it goes back to the fuel tank (someone correct me on that if i'm wrong)...
From memory the carbon canester is about 75 - 100mm in diameter and about 100mm tall.

yup.. know the thing ur talking 'bout now...
but it's not that either; the hose isn't long enuf to reach that side of the engine bay from the otherside of the engine.

they usually go from top of rocker cover to the top of the air filter. there will be a connection on top for it to join onto. That's the onlt hose of that length and weight i can think of that would be there that doesn't really affect the performance of the car if its there or not

tisn't that one... cos it's plugged in. it looked like it came from down the side of the engine somewhere

Got a camera ... this game of 20 questions could get old pretty quick sounds like the hose for the EGR valve or something to me ... but it's very hard to be sure without seeing it ..

inlet manifold may have a vacuum pipe to run power brakes? only 1.3's had power assisted brakes. below the carby on the side. if engine not original, can often have unneeded plumbings. also if snorkle has been fitted, some people change the plumbing so airfilter stays connected to the snorkle. If it was blocked off, it probably should be again. christover.

Chris can you get a pic of you motor and post it ?? that way Stumped can grab it and circle the part he is after .. and bring this guessing game to a happy close ..

but mines a hotch potch converted thing, most of the plumbing was not included on early 1.3's or on 1.0's so I have blocked off or not had much as well. but I can get a pic, but will wait see if he gets his own pic, first.

Maybe it is the energy poloriser?
Peter.
Possibly the negitive ion return line from the hydro-isolator, hope it's not as if that line is blocked the pressure that can build up in the hydro-isolator can be enormous ... I belive the reason they stopped making sierras was a few fauly symetric dual inversed hydo-isolators went critical, leaving the drivers with shrunken testicles and in sevre cases .. sterile ...

Yes Guy I have heard that too.
Peter.
thanks for that useful input
two pics... red is the general location of the hose when i noticed it. arrow end is where it disappeared from view somewhere, T end is the plugged end....
the hose is a similar diameter and material to the one that's coming out of the carby that the top arrow happens to be pointing at. dual arrows cos i can't remember zactly where it was comin from
