This document mentions some legislation and states the clause you are talking about, it's from 2003 though?

Here's another guide that mentions it as well.

Do not alter the ride height of the vehicle by more than one-third of
suspension travel specified by the vehicle manufacturer
this quote from DOT above
If you look at it this way the front shocks are approx 200mm travel okay less 1/3 = approx 60mm lift
rear 255mm approx less 1/3 = 75mm lift
Thats my thinking its all a grey area.
I think you should ask your mechanic to show you where it is documented from nissan about ride height and suspension travel as i am pretty sure no one will be able to including transport dept and if they can't how can you.

thankyou for the info mate yea i found the 1/3rd rule bt the only mechanic in my area who can do rwc pretty much dosnt want to deal with it yea its def grey considering nissan themselfs cant tell me the factory spec due to the age of the car. i tell you if i ever get defected for height ill be takn them to court because no1 can get there hands on the info. my car has superior 4inch coil lift no body and all superior adjustable links. do u think this is not legal height? when he looked at it he said it all looks well done but too heigh should i just take the trip to mackay and try a 4x4 mechanic there.

4" would be about 100mm lift.... that lift plus the tyres i assume you're running to fill that void are almost certainly going to be "illegal" without an engineers cert.
that said - if no one can prove the stock bumpstop distance then 1/3 can be whatever you say it is...

good luck with this one!
There is no ADR for determining std vehicle height, and as yet you will not find 1 person in DOT that will sign off on a specific height measurement (please tell me if you do cus' then they are liable - as presidence will be set and this is then court admissable). It is really a lot of hearsay. You can theoritically drive in to DOT with a 6" lift and get them to approve it, BECAUSE - they do not have (nationally approved and certified ) dimensions of every vehicle. So just tell them to prove you wrong or sign the paper telling you that it is not the height you say it is and they must attach evidence.... Then ask them for the ADR code on how to measure vehicle height? (hey they have a specific way in which they must check everything else on your vehicle!).

Wouldn't it be best to start here and then work out where to go after reading.

Hell there's a hilux just up from where I work with 35s and the bottom of the body is still above the height of the tyres.
Then while I nearly got defected for having different treads (only got fined) some patrol, rolls on by with 35 muddies and a 4-6" lift and that's what the cop was whinging on about to me, about 1 min before that guy rolls by in front of the cop while the cop is writing up my ticket.
So while the law, says X you need to be caught and fined, before it really means anything, eng certs only help you to get out of fines but if you never get fined well whats the point of the eng cert?

mmm, While I'd like to agree there's plently of 4WD's in QLD running around with 35s and 6+ inch lifts in front of cops.hiy6o wrote:next prob is no adjustable rods legal in QLD no 35s on patrols , good luck with that .
