Engine swap 4.2td for a tb4.5
Engine swap 4.2td for a tb4.5
I am just wondering what was involved in the transplant of a td4.2 intercooled turbo in a 93 gq ute and place it in a 99 gu 4.5 auto and vise versa so i am looking at changing both motors in either car. So am wondering if engine mounts need changing, wiring harnesses will adapt or will it need a rewire? and what other little things will annoy me? And also i want to keep the auto in the gu as i had a auto 4.2 turbo diesel Gq and it was very good to drive. Any help would be great
A mate and I have just swapped a TB42 auto with a TD42 manual in a GQ.
All I can tell you that it is a MAJOR PITA
Nothing wires up, you have to get the diagrams and wire it all up manually and still there will be issues like tacho not working and stuff like that.
I have been re-wiring the GQ for 3 days now and there is still so much to do.
If you have heaps of time and are very good with electrics and wiring do it. If not, leave it

Some info for someone else that may try it.
The plan was to swap the intake manifold from the 4.2 and put it on to the 4.5 motor keeping all the wiring the same.
The intake studson the 4.5 are set up the opposite to the 4.2 so the intakes cant be swaped.
The 4.5 oil filter housing is water cooler or heated.(may be able to swap this still working on it)
The bottom radiator hose is differant as well. (comes of the engine at a differant angle.)
The Dissy is differant. the coil is is the dissy on the 4.5. and has a 6 pin plug compaird to the 4 pin plu on the 4.2. as well the gear drive is not the same and the 4.2 shaft sits in a bush under the gear where the 4.5 does not.
Have not got the motor back in yet. I may need to add more to this.
