Hilux 5l diesel help

Post by SPINAFEX »

Hello everyone...I'm new........All looks good...
Is anyone prepared to take me through getting a 1997 Hilux dual cab with a 5L diesel engine to start.......I know it's a tall order because there could be months of questions ........But a bit of background.

Purchased this car very cheap ....very neglected but with potential
New fuses new injectors and glow plugs..new filter kit.
checked fuel control valve for power, water temp guage for power, power to the injector solenoid ,timing control valve.......engine turns over but no sign of life.
No power to the vacuum arrangement up near the aircon compressor..
Can anyone suggest what else I should be looking at ....
I am new to hilux's as well .Living 100k south of Uluru thought I should get one on the road.
Any help much appreciated....CHEERS

Has it been running that you know of.

Is the motor turning over . Or is it a possible timing belt broken

Hello and thanks for the reply..........Apparently it was running just before I got it .......I towed it to a shed ,and started replacing missing and MAKE-DO components.(aboriginal community -bush mechanics)
The starter motor turns the engine over and there is no timing belt warning light on the dash coming on -----all other lights are working ......Is there a way of finding out if the timing belt is broken without taking the front cover off.
The air-con compressor is missing and so there is the loose wire that normally goes to it sitting unconnected .Just close by is the vacuum relay with the 2 way hoses --one going to the inlet air manifold and the other down to the injector....I don't know if they are the right way around either .....CHEERS

You said you put new injectors in it?....... have you bled the air out of the fuel system properly. An obvious one, but you never know :!:

My hands would be trembling too much too keep her in the tally-ho.

I have tried that but don't know if it is working !!!!!
I pump the fuel filter primer to full resistance
Back off all injector pipe unions--- turn the ignition over -without depressing the accelerator----not too much fuel at the pipes (should it be gushing out)
Do up the nuts that display more fuel --then turn engine over again --do up the last 2..................no luck
Is it the right technique for a 5L....Cheers
