ON BOARD AIR

Post by antt »

yes i've read the FAQ section, so don't start :finger:

what i want to know is, people who have done an install before with an engine driven compressor, did you bother to run a tank? or was the output direct from the compressor enough to air up tires and use a rattle gun?

antt PM strange rover he had OBA on the mog rover IIRC
and there were a couple of threads on pirate 4x4.com about OBA setups

http://www.pirate4x4.com/forum/showthre ... hlight=OBA

and another

http://www.pirate4x4.com/forum/showthre ... hlight=OBA

I am keen to set up something like this with a york I have here, but I am weighing up the hassle, for around $400 I think you can get you hands on an electric compressor (12v) that would nearly be good enough to run rattle guns. I think it runs the high quality efficient ones.

Talk to RUFF about it he has played with them a bit too.

You wont run a rattle gun from anything without a tank.

Im running a york style compressor (2Pistons) and a small tank(1.5ltr) and could maybe use a rattle gun in small bursts but if something was real tight i would have no chance. With a larger tank it would prob be fine.

Would that large eletric compressor that Ross uses run a rattle gun Ruff?

Thats the new style we are getting now? Silver ones? Come with the pressure switch/relay in one?

Running a "Saden 508" and yep it airs up tyres real quick and I can run a rattle gun but its a tad down on power.
I havent got a tank setup as yet but do intend to run one for sure, a tank may also help with the rattle gun problem.
A grease nipple inserted into the sump can extend the life of the pump but I have run a "Flash lube" setup to it so it gets a fine oil mist every time it runs.

I run the suction line from the air cleaner too , this means no dirt gets into the pump, I figure every little bit of dirt/dust will aid the wearing out process. put a small hole into the suction tube and then insert the "flashlube" feed line :D

Wiring is childs play.... run a + wire from the key "on" position to a switch and then to the pump..... tip , use a pull on push off switch mounted in the dash, the toggle ones can be bumped on & off to easily !!

Yeah the silver one with the big heat sink on the compressor head larger unit over $400 I believe, comes with a silver braded hose.

cool. dont think i'm gonna bother running a lubrication system, just squirt a little oil into the intake before a trip etc.

Seing as we are posting pics now :D

The york style is the better pump to use as it has a sump and needs no other oiling as long as a small mod is done to the intake chamber. And should run forever like this with no problems. No oil comes out the delivery side as well.

you could run an oiler in line (like regular oil tools use) and a separator on the output line to clean the air up, would be quick and easy (you could end up with some oil through the system though)

If you are running a rotary style pump(Sanden) and dont want to run a lub system. Use a fuel filter on the intake and soak it in some trans fluid before use.

another tip....

if you are concerned about water in the compressed air getting into diffs via diff lockers, run a regulator after the pump, may also need to do this for air lockers as they only require 90 psi.
If ya not running air diff locks the old air cond "drier" will filter out most of the unwanted water and excess oil.... just replace it say once a year like an oil filter ! :D

almost forgot....
saden 508's and the York 210 units are pretty common pumps and one should set you back about $40 at a wrecker, make sure you get the hoses too..... may need the bits on the end plus the suction line for air conditioners is a much thicker tube and therefore less likely to suck its self closed and thus starving the pump of air

dont have the endless air A/C type compresser but do have a 24 ltr tank hooked up to my arb.. is good for airing up and can use a rattle gun long enough to take 6 wheel nuts off no worries, and put a few more back on, they need a twich up with a brace tho..
am planning to get ac compresser some day and plumb into the existing system... then just keep the arb for difflocks, all its really good for.. but for the time being my big arse tank makes up for the shitty arse compresser..

Mine takes air in from after my airfilters on the engine so water shouldnt be a hassel. I also run a 105psi pressure switch and this is not too high for ARB lockers. They recomend 90-110psi.

If your not running a pressure switch then the compressor may do the job on Air Tools without a tank.

Just dont leave the compressor running while your not using the air as it will blow a line or the front seal in the compressor.

My blow off valve is set at 130 psi, like I said I need a tank but its doing the job at the moment.
I'll have to update it soon tho cause I found some diff locks YAY !!! :D

those "driers" only hold a few drops of water and wont work for very long.
its also a good idea to use the original discharge hose if you can as it will handle the heat of the discharge line without melting like the plastic air lines do.
mate just drained most of the oil and filled it with grease [sanden sd508] and doesnt pump any oil into the line anymore.

I run a 25 litre tank under my tray that I picked up from a truck wreckers for $15 and another 15+ ltrs in my rollbar that is all plumbed into my ARB compressor.

I made up an adapter that lets me bring the whole thing up to 110 psi with a workshop compressor before I leave home and then the ARB compressor is generally enough to keep it at pressure while out driving. I use a rattle gun and get enough air to get the 6 wheel nuts on and off and the system comes back up to pressure before the ARB compressor cuts off due to heat.

The beauty with this system is that it is cheap. The biggest cost was the hose fittings and if it cost me $100 all up I'd be surprised. The only time I run out of air is during the air up at the end of a drive but you've got to expect that when you bring 38's back up to a safe road pressure from around 6 psi.
I'm not very good looking, so I guess I better be useful . . .

I run a Sanden 508, through an oil cooler, non return valve, then to a tank. The tank is fitted with a high/low pressure switch, a blow off valve, air line disconnect, and dash gauge. Also a set of air horns. The pressure switch is set up through a relay to ignition. The system is fully automatic. When pressure drops below about 80 psi, the compressor cuts in, and cuts out again at about 115 psi. When airing up tyres, I can increase the speed of the airing up by increasing engine revs till just below the point where the switch cuts out. Takes about 30 secs to inflate 10R's from around 15-18 psi to 32 psi. Works for me.

NEXT QUESTION!

do you think 3 1/2 in pipe with a seam will hold up to being made into a tank? i've got a mate who can weld it no probs, but will the seam cause dramas

ok, got the tank sorted, now i'm sorting out the pressure switch

my old man had one of these (see pics) laying around that i can use, but its supposed to be used in a 240v application i'm pretty sure, but i'm wondering if i'd be able to use it on my 4by setup?

if so, does anyone know how the hell to set em up? which hoses are supposed to go where etc.???????????
