yes the Gq came with a rb30e (carby model only ).

so if you want to put a rb30 efi in one, its a straight swap as long as it was a rb30 powered patrol.

you will need a wiring harness from a VL or skyline

ok yes the GQ came out with them from 89-95, their not rare and actually the cars due to being so gutless are cheap as, good clean ones from 2-4K, so if your thinking to buy a 4.2 to convert don't bother.

Major differences are obviously the engine mounts, the gearbox in the 3.0 is the same as the RD28 but with slightly different gearing, lots of myths about these on here and people who have never owned one advising you of how good or bad they are so be careful what you believe, I have covered them a few times if you search.

The front tail shaft is different it uses Universal joints the same as the navara, when you look in a lot of parts books they dont actually show a different number but it is. Also if you buy a factory RB30 patrol they already come with 4.3 diff ratios and need it to make up for the low down power they don't have, so really when you weigh up all the mucking around, mounts, hoses air con lines, exhaust fuel lines etc its not worth converting one.

Also if you are going to go ahead and drop in a VL or Skyline motor complete they have a smaller sump and smaller oil pump, also series 1 blocks dont have the oil and water feed and drain bolts for the turbo (except A8 VL blocks, they have the feeds and better oil pump), as far as efi goes the VL is useless for a loom as its integrated in to the car, the R31 EFI loom is separate and a much better choice....the list is endless.

thanks for the help boys...
u've given me something to think about hey!
although given what nutter said...?
i've already got a 4.2. the head just went.. shit itself, completly in half...(judging from the bucket of oil leaking out of it...) so im just weighing up the options...

Unless your going to turbo it I wouldn't go that way for any other reason its a step backwards.

Best value for money is a gas research throttle body and single converter, if your against gas VL turbo ECU (3TM about $120) VL turbo injectors ($100-150 second hand, can use others too), all other stuff stock VL or R31, in stock form they can run up to 12psi approx and around 180-200rwkw...very cheap power all do able on non turbo motor.

If you want a proffesional install in dandenong area AXT on cheltenham rd speak to andrew, average pricing (better than others I won't name here) very good work if you want drive in drive out, but expect to pay 4 to 10 grand depending on what you want done.

dont quote me on this as i havent done a conversion like this at all. but im pretty sure at least the passenger side engine mount on the chassis is in a different possie to the 4.2 counterparts. possibly drivers side is different as well. id be more inclined to say sell the 4.2 as is and buy a 3l patrol and if yours has a bit of gear swap it all over. probs a hell of a lot cheaper and easier in the long run.
imo anyway
