He's A Bit Sick Of The 2.8D In His Hilux Because Its Extremely Sluggish
He Wants A Hilux Petrol 2.7l Due To The Simpleness Of Fitting And The Torque (i know for a fact they go alright and rip a mean patch because we have one)
However I'm Pushing The Commodore VS/VN 3.8 V6. I Reckon They Have A Little Bit More Punch, Also I Like Like Coil Packs Rather Than The Dizzy.
From What Ive Seen The V6's Arnt As Reliable At The 2.7's Due To Overheating And Such. But Im Not Going To Jump To Conclusions

i have had 4 hiluxs with v6 motors from vn to vs models 3 where auto 1 was a manual
i hated the manual loved the auto but find the vn-vp auto boxes where more responsive as they work off a kick down cable no like the vr-vs as they are electric (respond by the motor computer)
and if you are going to run a v6 use marks 4x4 adaptors

if you can use the r150 box from the v6 surf or the turbo diesel bundys much stronger.
get the original diesel rad 4cored and use the marks engine driven fan kit works a treat.

The 3RZ I have is out of a 05 Hilux(last of the gen 5s), it has a twin coil pack setup no dizzy. I haven't fitted it yet so I can't tell you how it goes driving.
I choose the 3RZ as it is a simple install, with no need for adapter bell housings. This making the conversion cheaper. Its only a four cylinder, leaving more room in the engine bay.
It also has a simple wiring loom to wire up as the motor feeds direct to the ECU and no other inputs like on the commodore for body control module. Also the 3RZ was made with 4WDing in mind.
Not saying it can't be fixed but the V6 hilux/4runners I have been out have had overheating issues as soon as you bounce the V6 through the rev ranges.
The power stats are
3RZ 110Kw
VN V6 127Kw
VS ECOTEC V6 147Kw, but harder to wire in.

The bommadore motor when pushed... Its a good thing the parts are easy to get as you will be liley to need the spares. IE oill pumps, lifters etc

3rz's are 4wd motors, they have plugs/caps and rubber boots for 4wding, they have proper oil pickups for offcamber, the injection setup is for low torque - ideal for wheeling, and never have heating issues.

3RZs can be had for as little as $1000 for a complete conversion(There is currently one on Ebay for $800 complete conversion) You wont buy the parts you will need to fit the V6 for $1000. Then there is the motor and all the modifications that go with fitting the engine correctly. Including chassie mods, sump mods, powersteering line mods and suspension mods(the V6 is heavier than the deisel) just for a start.
The 3RZ bolts in with only Exhast, a quick wiring job, modify the 3RZ radiator mounts and sorting the fuel system out which you can use the 3RZ tank with some mods.
It lugs well it revs well it is also lighter than the V6 and the deisel. And if your rego is calculated on the amount of Cyl its not going to cost you any more to register or insure.
The 3RZ bolts in with only Exhast, a quick wiring job, modify the 3RZ radiator mounts and sorting the fuel system out which you can use the 3RZ tank with some mods.
It lugs well it revs well it is also lighter than the V6 and the deisel. And if your rego is calculated on the amount of Cyl its not going to cost you any more to register or insure.

You can get a bellhousing to fit either the G series or R series. Its only the TD and the V6 that had an R series gearbox. OK, thats where I cam un-stuck, I had the later gearbx but the arlier transfer. Trying to fix the old 5th gear layshaft issue. I couldnt get a trasfer at a decent price so ended up rebuilding.

Out of the choices given go the 3rz as Ruff has said its cheaper and imo a heaps better engine.
If you want to go to expense and hassle then skip the pos commo motor and go straight to a 1uz. I have had a few commos for work and the engines suck in them stuff having one in a 4wd.
