rattle gun - home use

Post by thehanko »

ok, so i am sick of swapping tyres by hand. also bent/ twisted my wheel brace trying to undo a nut after a stupid tyre place over did it. and its evenmore of a pain to use.

my birthday is coming up and the missus will need some ideas .

so air powered or electric?

I dont have a decent air compressor yet, and cant be bothered at this stage getting it out etc etc as this should be easier than the current way of doing it by hand.

has any one got basic electric ones 12v or 240? how are they? i used a chinese 12v one a while ago and it basically spun up to speed then whack it engaged and jolted the nut undone - couldnt see it lasting long to be honest.

another mate suggested getting something like a small air tank which i could pressurise off my arb compressor and run an actual rattle gun of it, and it could refill between tyres... soundsd again like a bit of hassel.

are there any rattle guns which could work of low air flow like an arb compressor? probably not but worth a try.

Get her to buy you a decent air compressor. If you go electric you have to pay for a motor for every tool. Go air powered and there will suddenly be a whole heap of cheap air tools you never knew were so handy.

I bought a rattle gun from Supercrap for $40ish. Haven't been able to kill it yet and have used it heaps.

I got a decent compressor and the cheapest rattle run they had, its been thrown round the shed a few times and keeps on going.

And you'll use it for more than just wheel nuts ;)

I use a chep r/gun from REPCO ($70 I think), works fine except my compressor is a little Supercrap job and can't keep up.

They don't need to be expensive if you only use them once a week.

I used a snap on electric rattle gun to change my suspension and it was awesome. Lasted the whole time (6hrs on the driveway) and had plenty left in it. Cost about $1000 though, which would set you up with a decent compressor anda few tools.

I've got a cheap compressor and a few air tools of Ebay that cost me bugger all. Have got a rattle gun which has reduced my time changing over the tyres from 45 mins to 15. I also have an air wrench as well as a couple of other handy things like an air gun for blowing out things like dusty air filters etc. A tyre fitting for inflating tyres nice and quick. I have it set up permanently with an air water separator to preserve my air tools. I think all up including tools, 2 lengths of air hose and the separator, it cost about $300. Best money i have spent in recent times.

This is the exact kit I bought. I was patient and only paid about $40 if I remember rightly.

I use a Snap on electric one and its great. Its a couple of years old now but still going strong, rarely a nut it wont undo. Bit pricey though.

I got an SP AIR 3/4 drive 950ft/lb for $470.

A quality gun will last you forever if oiled before use. Check out the power rating and flow rate of the cheapies before you buy one too.

I have one of these, but 18V and it has no issues with wheel nuts, suspension bits or anything else i cat get it on. The only problem i have come across is stuff that's been threadlocked

It was purchased for work use as i don't have room for a compressor on my ute. The $600 it cost would get you a nice compressor setup if it was just for workshop use but like others have said cordless is great for on the road

I got the Hitatchi 18v rattlegun, works fantastic, not overly powerful, but its great for all those repetitive sumps like on truck sumps etc...
Plus its nice n compact, not the size of the titanic like the Snapon ones.

the hitachi or snap on would be amasing but way out of my price range for this.

i would be more likely to go down the route of a decent compressor etc before that, if i buy a compressor i will get something good enough for spraying. but it once kind of thing. but was trying to avoid a compressor set up at this stage.

i have no real wish for use out and about only at home, maybe im better of setting up a compressor up under the house and just uncoil a hose etc. i just wanted to avoid having to wheel one out etc etc.

it would be good to have a proper rattle gun i guess.

I brought a $99 Supercheap Compressor and there $90 air tool kit ages ago and there still working. Came with Rattle gun, air wrench, chisel/hammer thing and something else.
Compressor is making funny noises. But I havent looked after it, been knocked around while moving. But still works.

Oh and to save the big uncoil thing. I brought 30m of air line. Plan is to set the carport up with air line to the 4 corners. Then I only need to get a 2-3m length of airline and the rattle gun when I want to change tyres.

But a cordless Impact gun would be nice.

I got a rattle gun, air wrench, & 8 impact sockets from a Garage sale for 25bucks. :D

Go for a decent air compressor, and then just keep an eye out for the other tools.

I now also have a spray gun, cleaner, air drill, jackhammer, buffer, all from garage sales.

just get a recoil hose so you can pull it in and out whenever you like.

I have a supercheap compressor and gun though and its got no power behind it. No idea how you guys are working so well with yours.

The best value rattle gun is the Supercheap 1/2" drive Heavy Duty one that costs $100. It's actually a twin piston sucker that'll crank the tightest bolt. The same thing in a tool brand shop will be $250+.

The $40 gun (same as the one in the air tool kit) is easily half as powerful! Well worth the extra bucks (had the cheaper one for years.)

At least 12cfm for spraying & any decent use from any air tools. Things like air grinders, & die grinders use a lot of air flow. I had a Peerless one & it dies a quick death, 3 months from memory. My current Peerless is 10.5 CFM & its a bit small, I sometimes have to wait for it to keep up.

Also stay away from the direct drive compressors like the one listed in the Ebay ad, sure they charge quickly but that is at the expence of the compressor pump, no direct drive with at least 2 cylinders is the go for longevity.

Air tools, well you get what you pay for but the cheap ones are much better these days, if I was still in the trade I would use nothing less than Chicago Pnumatic, my preference is Bluepoint, my Bluepoint rattle gun is 15 years old & never been touched, & it was used daily in my shop for 7 of those years.
Don't ask me, ask them. I'm just runnin for my life myself.

Depending on what you do around the house I've found my compressor invaluable, and it's only the GMC one.

I bought a decent air brad, staple and framing nailer kit for any woord/reno work. Man it's good driving in a nail this quick - bang.

Air chisels make light work of steel, and an air socket that get's in where the rattle gun can't makes light work of bolts.

etc etc...

As for mounting, mine is now permanently fixed under the garage bench and I have one of those auto rewinding hose units that's about 20m long. That plus the old section of hose I bought as an extension and it reaches anywhere...

good point re renos etc as i have to do the decking at some stage so nail gun would be excellent.

Mkpatrol - Thanks for the tech info on what to look for, as i would have been shooting blind otherwise.

Eddy - I hate you! I never find anything decent at garage sales, I have stopped bothering stoping when i drive past one. only things ive ever bought worth while was a set of jumper leads... yay

I swear garage sales had better stuff when i was a kid.

Looks like im on the look out for a reasonable compressor style set up.

keep on the info of 'Ive got such and such and think this about it' its awsome info.

cheers

Turps:
Is this what you got? Does the rattle gun have enough grunt?

Nem, if you mean that the rattle gun from that set is the same as this then it certainly looks similar... Not a huge fan of Superworks brand, but i seemed to get a decent life out of the little power drill of theirs that i had.
And i guess you mean THIS when you say the heavy duty one?

What do you mean "easily half as powerful"? Is the smaller one heaps less powerful, or nearly as powerful? Sorry to be pedantic, just trying to get a feel for what might be good value for very occaisonal use.
(And sockets thrown in, in a carry case is always nice...)

Spot on RO8M.

The one in the kit above is okay, but not very powerful. It is exactly the same as the one in your link that is $39.99, just a different housing. They're a single hammer design and won't have enough grunt to remove a super tight wheel nut, or chassis bolt etc.

I have the above kit, have had for years and everything still works. But got frustrated with the rattle gun on the heavy jobs. I couldn't get wheel hub bolts off or anything with it (especially after a few years)

I bought this one (for $100 dammit, thats a GOOD sale) and I have yet to need the highest setting. On the second or third setting it ripped out crossmember bolts and flywheel bolts like a maniac. It actually recoils in your hand lol. So worth the extra dollars.

If you read the specs, it almost literally has twice the torque output.

Also, if you look in other tool shops, they all pretty much sell the same thing. Bunnings sell an $80 rattle gun, but it's the same as the $40 one in SCA. Proper tool shops sell twin hammer guns (with identical specs) for around $250, making the SCA HD one a genuine bargain (for a change)!

sorry yeah i saw that one but kind of discounted it in my mind imediately as a rattle gun option - to cheap, but still almost worth it just for the other fittings like the blower and sockets.
