How to identify your engineers certificate and get a copy
I recently bought a GU. Took it in to transfer the rego the other day and I was asked about the engineers certificate. I didn't know it had one and the RTA don't know what it is for, but apparently I can be booked for not having a copy in the car.
Does anyone know if there any way of finding out, other than ringing every engineer in NSW?
Thanks,
Dave

Re: How to identify your engineers certificate and get a cop
in Victoria, Vicroads take a copy of the engineers cert.. I'd have thought RTA would be the same and would be able to tell you who it was?
The engineering certificate statement on the rego papers varies depending on what the RSO (registry services officer) types onto them. As a minimum, the certificate number should appear in the form "Modified as per Report XXXnnnnMP." The name and date of the certificate might or might not be there.
In the above example, the certificate number is in the current format, which is 3 letters, 4 numbers, with MP (for Modified Production) at the end. In imported (pre-'89 or over 15-yo) vehicle would have IP (for ImPorted) on the end, while individually constructed vehicles have IC.
The first 3 letters are the engineer's initials. The usual thing to do if you can't find a copy of the certificate through previous owners is to go through the RTA's list of signatories (VSI 15) and work out which engineer did the certificate, contact them and ask nicely for a copy. I've come across some who charge $50 for a copy, but most will provide a copy for free or a few dollars to cover postage, etc.
If the certificate number isn't in this format, it's older than 1994 and almost impossible to get a copy of.
The RTA registries don't always keep their copies of the certificates, and a lot never made it to the archives.

I'm in a simillar situation.
My car had a body swap in 1994 and the rego papers now show it as a convertible (which it is) but there are no other comments on the papers.
The engineers report was lost by the preious owner and the RTA don't keep them longer than 5 years and the engineers who did it couldn't be bothered looking for a copy as he no longer engineers cars.
I've since had an engine swap engineered and the papers now show that mod.
I'll probably have it all re-ingineered so it is 100% legal and keep a few copies of the paperwork at home and in the truck for safety sake.
I've never been pulled up in the vehicle in 10 years of ownership and it's pretty "out there" but I'm old and grey so the Police probably look at me and figure it's legal, so leave the poor old bastard alone.

My old truck was put together way back about 1982/3.Then all the maker did was take it to the local police who then checked it out and passed it as ok.Was a extra letter or number on the rego.Had no problems when I changed the motor and went to Vic roads and updated the engine number. They looked up the details and noted that the chassis number was missing,so used the chassis number of the original 45 series donor troopy Did this as they first found the compliance plate for the troopy and did not look further.Still remember there looks when they first sited the old truck. If the old truck had a identity crisis before ,it has more of a one now.
Cheers
