RV 79 Turbo performance

Post by paulm958 »

We are currently building up a 2003 79 series RV tray ute, as mentioned in an earlier post i was a little dissapointed with the power compared to my 100 series (factory origanal unmodified) turbo,
i have just installed a full Beaudesert 3 inch exhaust with the custom castiron dump pipe,
So i thought id take time out to let anyone who may be intersted in modding up know how the aftermarket stuff performs,
Firstly i should mention the driveline is completely stock,
So here goes, the 100series 0-100 12sec
the RV std 0-100 a little over 20 sec
my mates stock 3.0 Litre Diesel (non turbo), 0-100 35 sec lol

So today i fitted the exhaust, id been putting it off as i thought it would be a shit@#%T job, but 2.5 hrs and all done, the exhaust fitt up was awsome, everthing linned up perfect, quality spot on (highly recommend)
Thanks to the forum members who reccomended this exhaust
,
So out for a test run, at first it didnt seem notably differant but it definatly reved a little harder, before with the test run you had to change into fourth at 95kmhs as it sortoff hit the wall, but now it would go all the way to 100kmhs before the need to change,
also should mention im running bfg 285/75/16 km2 which by the GPS puts the speedo out by 4.5khms (so aprox 96 = 100) but ive been going by the speedo not the gps for the tests,
now without another gear change 0-100 16 sec,
LOOKOUT im ready for Calder raceway lol,
Tommorrow the chip arrives so ill keep you updated!!!
so far so good

gday mate ive also got a 2004 79 rv nd about 1 month ago i put a beadesert 3 inch with dumpipe nd no mufflers on and as you said everything bolted up perfectly and took it for a run nd definetly noticed quicker acceleration, i also put a k&n air filter in last weekend and notice it went noticably better and more turbo noise im very impressed.

keep us updated cheers josh

K&N's have a VERY bad reputation for filtering on 4wd's.

As in bad enough to put in a brand new, factory oiled filter and then being able to wipe dust out of the intake pipes on the engine side of the filter one dusty road later!

X2

Kand N +off road = BAD idea

any dust will get stuck to the oil instead of being spun off by the centrifugal separator any dust that does not get stuck to the oil on the filter will end up in your engine

go out and hold your Kand N up to the light it will scare you
but if not then you may as well just leave the filter off that will give you good performance with not much less filtering

the 100 has a lot more power than the 79 it has the same out put as the new v8 in the new utes

it runs different PN turbo ,injector pump, computer and an intercooler

Thanks Thrashlux and Ferret, this is why this site is so informative, one thing i do know is HP ussually comes at a cost so it pays to do your homework, and im a little new to the diesel performance and the last thing i want to do is trash a perfectly good engine, i think it may pay to steer away from the K&N as ive seen what the inside of a dirtbike looks like after its been dusted$$$$$$$$$

OK, the chip rolled up Friday so i installed it today, i ended up going for the Dtronic 79, easy installation aprox 15 mins, to be honest didnt really notice a real differance, maybee im expecting to much, there only seems to be a little more mid range hit, has anyone else tried this chip???

the 79's also run a different final ratio too, which can affect your 0-100 times.

i have a dp chip on my v8 and was expecting some huge improvement... didnt notice much.

HOWEVER, it is so much smoother in power delivery now and it is more powerful as you accelerate. i just dont think it gave me a $1500 improvement but it is there. youll feel it eventually
turbos are nice but i'd rather be blown

G'day fella's just joined & first post... glad too see a bunch of 70 owners talking..
I purchased one of the last 4.2RV's in December 06 as i did not trust the new model..

I did put the Safari chip in asap & was a noticable improvement in pick up & accelleration.. i also did it for the fuel economy but notsure there is too much the way i drive.
Later put the 3 inch beaudesert on & it was a big plus.
1. turbo spools up much better feels looser or less restricted.
2. comes in a few hundred revs lower now
3. It returns to idle faster rather than hanging up there.

I agree those oil filters are dodgy i put a uni filter over the safari head & works brilliantly as i recently spent 3 days in the dust & had no need to clean the air filter or box, just the sock in turps & re oil it & put in a plastic bag till next trip.. some vehicles have sensor trouble with the oil going through the system also..

Never thought to time it to 100 but will do it just for comparison sake to see what we come up with, then i guess we all need to up the boost alittle which ive been putting off..... cheers Towie

re-285's i just took my KM 285's off & put my other set of 265 bighorns on & it was a very noticable difference in handling & power delivery was better..

Yep i gotta agree, for the $1500 i was expecting a little more, but thanks for the replys as mentioned it definatly does feel smoother, but as Towie mentioned and other comments im now not to keen and rush out on the filter just yet,
im relativley happy now with the performace and agree i will probably appreciate it more with a load or on those narley hills,

Also agree with smaller tyres performace would be up,
im currently running the BF goodridge KM11 i think in old terms work out about 33 inch and no doubt they suck a bit of power but i think are worth it,
The Beaudesert exhaust was definatly one of the better bolt ons and no hassels,
i also just fitted the Safari snorkel head today and im currently fitting one of those Tigerz11 12,000lb rope winches,
Man i better stop spending im not gonna have anything left for a Beer!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Wet n cold in Maffra i bet ive spent heaps of time in the area and 5 years in Lakes Entrance but now FNQ & the sun  ..

Did a run in the 4.2 this arvo and rougly around 17 alittle less if i punish it to 4 grand+ perhaps & thats with 265's so iguess your on a good thing not that we drive them for their outstanding sprint performance..

did you somehow wind the boost up on the V8? HOW.... I NEED MORE POWER

Dp also do retunes on the chips... to any level you want, it just voids their warranty as it would with any chip company

OK so far as mentioned i put the Beaudesert 3 inch with cast iron dump pipe,
The Dtronic 78 full plug in chip,
The Safari snorkel hat, decided to leave the rest of the air filter system origanal,
Pedders 41mm bore track right shocks,
Air bagged rear
12000 lb Tigerz11 09 rope winch
BFG M2
ipf lights
ARB winch bar
turbo timmer
uhf tx3500
and just got a price on front and rear ARB lockers with big pump and a few extras, fully fitted $3000,
if that happens certainly no beer for Grand final
