Where the flywheel bolts the crank, is the dowel there for alignment purposes or for shearing? Slight issue of dowel being undersize for the flywheel hole...

In most cases the dowel is there to make sure the flywheel only goes on one way... EG Landcruiser 2F or 3F where the timing is set by the hole in the block near the flywheel.
A slight miss-sizing of the dowel shouldn't matter as long as the timing still lines up.

if you are satisfied there is enough bolts of sufficient size to provide sufficient clamping pressure onto the crank then don't worry about it..

you could have a sleave turned up for the flywheel hole and use a dowel to suit the crank.

Thanks guys, just put it on and torqued it up. would have made a sleeve but the flywheel dowel hole wasnt on centre with the block dowel pin.
