Looking at DIY turbo on 100 series 1hz..
I very rarely go above 3200rpm so I would like to install a smallish turbo that will give me power in the lower revs.. up to maybe 3500 rpm. I have seen that the DTS kit uses a mitsy td05-16G, I am thinking of going just a little bit smaller than that, maybe 14G.
I am looking for some useable extra power but reliability is my main concern. I will be looking to run around 7-10 pound boost, and will be installing an intercooler and EGT sensor.
Any thoughts/doubts/suggestions?
Or should I just go for a 'normal' size turbo?
Obviously there is a point where small is too small.. anyone know what that point would be?

smallish turbo for 1hz?

hey buddy ive got the DTS kit on my hilux 2.8diesel. Makes a massive difference, mostly in torque and acceleration, but holds hills awsome.
I think you'll find that the TD05-16g will be perfect for your car, and if you want to get the lower down power, get a custom 3" dump pipe and 3" exhaust. This will create no backpressure against the turbo, and allow it to spool up quicker. My hilux basically spools at 1200rpm, and pulls to about 2500.

you want to get the "correct" sized turbo. using a small one to restrict power is not a good idea, use the correct size and set the waste gate and fuel tuning to control boost and power levels for reliability.
A small turbo will potetnially restrict the engines natural intake flow and exhaust flows at higher RPM and the turbo itself will become less efficient as RPM rise, this will mean you are adding unneccessary heat into the intake air, this is exactly what 1HZs dont like. If the turbo becomes a restriction, your air/fuel ratio will change adding more heat to the combustion process through excess fuel to get the same power.
the right size turbo should give you good low RPM power increase, without restricting the topend, if you dont want to push it to its limit, the turbo will be efficient and not overworked, so will be more reliable for longer.
