there is a mob in melb who do the patrol front diff centre into 80/100 series front housings...
you get to keep the better brakes, better steering, better birfields, better suspension design of your 80/100 series and upgrade the front centre....
Plus no engineering needed...

why do they use a patrol centre, and not a rear 80/100 ?bj on roids wrote:there is a mob in melb who do the patrol front diff centre into 80/100 series front housings...

Is the patrol centre stronger than a rear 80/100 ?

its not cheap
it not cheap they where talking 5000-7000 as nissan and toyo
diff gears need to be changed front and rear
you need a 60 series front diff as bracing is bigger you weld it to an i beam cut out diff centre knob then get your new gu diff cut it up till it fits in place of toyo then line up axels so they are spot on thru the centre
then weld it all back up find some sort of custom axels
then cut off the 80 series diff mounts and weld them to you 60 set up
paint and re install big job
i seen this done at 4bfabrications .com .au

Re: 80 series front diff upgrades
really? ask him how much torque he put on the carrier bearing side adjusters?? bet he can't tell you....tiny80 wrote: all rebuilt buy a really good diff builder just give it a hard time
IMO
solid spacer
yukon 4.1's chyro'ed by longfield
ARB/Detroit
Then built "PROPERLY" (using correct torque settings to suit the new gears, which will increase strength by upto 60%)
easy!

really? ask him how much torque he put on the carrier bearing side adjusters?? bet he can't tell you....
he will tell me i bet it will be right as he builds just diffs and i have a strange 9 inch in the lc torana he built for over 10 years 80000km with 400 chev and 250hp hit of nos on the 1/4 its the only thing that is not rebuilt in that time he segested spaces air locker the first time but it only costs that prevented it.
but now the budget is better and the elec locker in the bin
yukon diff gears the best ?
what brand of spacer is best ?

A high pinion diff is needed to clear the steering arm. Rear 80/100 diffs arn't high pinion, GQ/GU, 80 front etc areShadow wrote:why do they use a patrol centre, and not a rear 80/100 ?bj on roids wrote:there is a mob in melb who do the patrol front diff centre into 80/100 series front housings...

31 spline strange axles are approx the same strength as stock toyota 30 spline axles, and most 4by's will snap more than there fair share of stock axlestiny80 wrote:[

Not saying he doesn't know how to build a 9" but there are a few tricks that are toyota 8" specific. If he is really that good then you have nothing to worry about.

I have to agree with most of what '1madengineer' said. I have owned my 80 series for 4 years now and within the first month of owing it I broke most of the teeth off the stock 4.11 front crown wheel and pinion gears. I took advantage of the bad situation back then by installing arb air lockers, 4.56 diff gears and longfield axles and cv's... 4 years later of solid abuse running beadlocked 36's, arb lockers locked in reverse flat stick, etc the front diff has finally just let go (8 broken teeth of the crown wheel).
I have done a lot of research including ringing many places in the states and the serious guys run "Yukon Gears". Im about to order 4.88's from them and getting them sent to Longfield for their cryo treatment. Worth the money for the piece of mind when in the bush!

No
hands and mums dont count!!!
I didn't think that it was in the $5k-$7k range.
I talked to Carlton a while back about this and he mentioned some axle that would not even need to be custom, but if you are building a diff... Long 30/30s are the only way to fly.
Dunno who does the conversion but there is a few out there, I have seen them.
Try bubs 4x4 he might build you one.

We have done many hundreds of cruiser diffs, most broken before they came to us, some up to 4 times, and havent had a broken one back after fitting solid pinion spacer, decent cw and p, and nice strong ARB carrier, though the new design units arent quite as good a design for this, as the previous older units.
[On a side note, ARB arent carrying spare parts for the old ones now, you have to buy a whole new locker instead......]
We have seen the teeth marks of the pinion rubbing on the carrier itself the pinion head will flex around that much, but the diff didnt break, after being done as per above. I have seen some rears also that break when the bearing cap bolts stretch far enough to allow the carrier to rooster over, when fitted with the above by others, but you can also cradle the housing there to help prevent this.
Also have afew with GU centre, where we fitted cruiser spline gears into ARB locker to run cruiser axles in GU centre so it fixes tailshaft angle on lifted trucks being top pinion, and stronger carrier, but this does limit ratio's to use.
We used 75 series housing, new ring for flange mount of carrier welded in and extended axle tubes while laminating.
All of the above will be more than your budget currently allows.

Do u run part time on the road? If not, do this. I have the solid spacer in my front and havnt broken it, thats not saying much because its a diesel....but in my last cruiser, which was turbo petrol, i used the arb locker to strengthen it and part time (donuts)
