Hi All
I'm Just about to start a new Project,
- LWB Sierra
- GQ diffs (coil sprung)
- 7mge engine -Displacement: 2954 cc (180.2 cu in)
Weight: 119.5 kg
Output was 190-204 hp (142-152 kW) at 6000 rpm
185-196 ft·lbf (250-265 Nm) at 4800 rpm
- 4-speed A340E Auto
Have no idea what the best choice of transfer case will be, Any idea's or suggestions ? ?
Just after any pointers or advise or even anyone in the newcastle area who wants to help, (possible someone who is a great welder )
any one got or know someone who has a GQ that i can buy the diff's and everything else that attaches them to the chassis?
its gonna be a beast when complete

Oh and yes this is going to be my daily driver when complete so needs to get engineered and registered in nsw, any engineer's out there with any input on legalities to watch out for?

have you spoken with a engineer before you started collecting parts. you need to deal with one way before you start, make sure you sit down with one and work it all out so there are no surprises. Most if not all, are reluctant to sign off on a completed vehicle they have never been involved with.

yeah gonna book in some time after i put down on paper exactly what the plan is and then see how much i need to change it, before i decide 100% if i'm gonna go ahead with the plan, because as much as i love this engine and how awsome it should be with gq diff's running on coil's, this sierra will be usless to me complete if i can't register it,
but either way all the parts i've got already have been free or really cheap, and the engine is out of my car i drive at the moment, so i know the condition of the engine and gearbox is perfect, and i've got everything there if i need any other bit's from the car for the transplant,
so worst case i'll use the LWB to swap out all the running gear from my SWB and sell the SWB chassis and bits i don't use, and scrap the idea

Gear driven not chain has a 3.1 low range and can be geared down to 5.1 cheap and can be modded for just about any drive combo. Come in a heap of various high range gearings as well. Can also be set up for remote mount. And also very strong for a factory box.
I would be going a shorter motor as to get the weight further back for a better balance.

I really doubt that you're going to fit a 7M into a Sierra engine bay. I know of a sierra with a 4.3L chev V6 and T350 auto, where the guy mounted the radiator and trans cooler in front of the radiator support, then built a new grille to cover them. You've got a longer engine still.
In all seriousness, if you want to run a Sierra body and Patrol diffs, get a patrol chassis and drop the Sierra body on top of it. Then you can section the front guards and bonnet to add the 200mm or so that you're going to need to make the engine fit in the engine bay.
Without fail, everybody I know who has fitted Patrol diffs to smaller vehicles have realised at the end that the would have been better off starting with a Patrol chassis.

well gotta tell you the truth guys its not lookin good,
adding up all the pro's and con's and gotta tell ya the con's are really adding up real fast
so as all smart people do, i'm thinkin of cutting my losses (none really but a shed full of basicly free spare's) and going a far easier direction,
so i'm now thinkin of just building the LWB chassis with the trusty Lux Diff's sitcking with Leaf spring and the vit 1.6 and a trusty Rocklobster Suzuki Transfer, Well for now any way until i move at the end of the year and get a bigger workshop

if you do mount a zook body on another chassis please don't go calling it a zook. you will upset us strange suzuki purists...

As Athol stated the chassis is a good idea , you won,t gain much weight
on this sort of project by using the larger chassis. You will gain
a lot of good factory geometry and reliable steering and suspension components.
Try using complete unmodified systems such as brakes ,steering ect
other words use the master and booster from the chassis,s body
Take the time to to place the body as tight to the chassis as standard,
You will need major tunnel mods to do this,
You will need to retain the heater demister function for engineering
you can modifiy the standard one or use an after market one on the left
where the pacel tray normally resides.
Good pionts are you will have a lower cog then the chassis donar ,
and you can expect to shave between 500 to 800 KG off the Fat chassis doner vehicle by using the sierra body.
