FJ55 5-speed box to replace the BJ40 4-speed?

Post by ABMM »

My old 13B engined BJ40's got a 4-speed box which is great unless you need to take her on the highway. I was at the local wreckers today pulling the steering wheel off an old FJ55 and I noticed that it's got a 5-speed box. Anyone know if it's possible to replace the BJ40 4-speed with a 5 speed out of an FJ55? If not, are there any other viable alternatives? A 5th gear would be magic.

i doubt it would be straight bolt on. try and find something from a bj42/70/73/74 and it should just bolt straight on with no mods. you'll probly need the cross member, front and rear shafts too. if not something from a HJ45/47/60/75. even then you might have issues with input shafts.

If I were you i'd be going back to that 55 and getting the steering column (60 steering upgrade) along with the leaf springs (both front and rear). The springs should sort your current suspension issues (i think its you that needs rear springs - the 55 rears should be ideal)..

55 never came with a 5 speed, so maybe it is useful to you....?

A 5 speed behind a F or H series engine is no good to use with a B series engine as the input shaft is the incorrect length.
