Hi looking at putting a 6.5 chev diesel turbo in my GQ
i want to do a common rail type diesel injection system.
anyone done it?
suggestions on aftermarket computers to suit?
suggestions on a good tuner for this as nobody seams to do it they all just want to go old school old direct injection mechanical method instead of more precise electronic method.
Myself I would like modern fuel economy and power and figure if going to spend the money may as well do it right the first time and go modern
also going to run a 4l30e gearbox been told to keep the two systems seperate but. auto electronics to engine electronics as easier so just chasing down the engine side of things

help needed for aftermarket computer suit chev v8 diesel

I don't know if a aftermarket system would exist for common rail diesel. The injectors on a common rail switch very different to a normal EFI system, so therfore any of your motec/wolf/ems/autronic type systems would not work at all. I don't know if there would be enough of a market for anyone to make such a thing.
My suggestions would be to either use the 6.6 duramax engine,
Or you may be able to adapt the duramax engine control system to your engine. It would require you to use all the same sensors as the duramax fitted to the engine. The duramax ECM is fully tuneable so you could tune injection time etc to suit. I think there would be alot of headaches to deal with trying to set something up.

Why a 6.5? Are you sure you really want to? As said i'd go the duramax, the 6.5 isn't that much of a powerhouse (trust me, been there done that).
I'm going from a fuelled up 6.5 to a turboed, intercooled, fuelled, 3.9 isuzu 4bd1, better power, heaps better economy, oh and did i mention better power.
Don't waste your time and money on one of these engines, if your going to spend $10k+, spend it putting the duramax in, the 6.5 is just to old.

DID is very different from traditional petrol and diesel systems.
For example
Fuel is not injected in a single shot - to control cylinder pressure rise. The knowledge / equipment / time etc etc just to get the injections right would be a significant task let alone the hundreds of other variables.......
Have a read how common rail systems actually operate and you will quickly understand its no system for home fiddlers.

Buy a 1/2 cut and intergrate the whole lot, then learn how the system works to tune it properly. You cannot go old school on common rail systems. Besides who would go to a carby system after running efi?
