Hey there,

Been a while since I have been on this forum
I just moved up from Melbourne to Brisbane and don't really have a handle on what modifications you can run up here legally (and not so legally).

My TJ in Melbourne runs 35's or 36's on beadlocks, half top, cut down bumpers etc and looks pretty rough but it is not an issue at all driving around.
Never seem to get hassled, although I am running the 7" warn flares so tyres are basically covered.

Thinking of building a JK rubicon with v8/auto/atlas swap, and 35's or 37's on road.
Then running 39.5's for comp work and retaining the standard D44's but heavily trussed with longfields in the front, cromo rears and cryoed gearsets although depending on how they hold up in comps I can see D60's in the future.

If I can get away with airshocks or coilovers that is a bonus.
Extensive cage and bodywork as required and I will have to do some heavy trimming to the rockers and wheel arches to keep low COG and make it look more street/police friendly.

Can anyone help me out with the following:

- Is it possible to run 35's on road in QLD?
- What about bigger if its engineered, 37's, 39's etc.
- Does anyone know a decent engineer?
- How about a decent place to do the v8 conversion?
- Decent jeep or general 4wd fabricators close to brissy?

I also need to work out what competitions are on up here and the level of driving you can find within 3-4 hours of Brisbane or even closer.

Any help much appreciated.

You are in for a world of pain...
Lots of guys on here can do the mods for you..
As for an engineer, good luck...
best to start with QLD Transport (good luck)
running anything over 35's in QLD will depend on your diff's
think 25mm over standard..

As for tracks there are heaps around..
look in the tracks section and hook up with some guys in your local area..

Covered recently here, a couple of pages back.

Have a look at NCOP recommendations, QLD Transport regulations, and go from there.

It doesn't matter what you get engineered, it is waht will happen when you go over the pits at QLD Transport tha really matters, or when you get pulled over by them.

Biggest thing will be the tyres. In short, not a hope in hell of anything above the +15 or +50mm over stock.

Anything remotely competitive off road will have next to no chance of being registered on road.

Do you have to get it inspected every year up here?
Or just when you get canaried?

I don't even want to bring my jeep up here after hearing that it's such a PITA.
Pay for it to get transported and then get canaried straight away.
At least in vic it would only cost me a slab or two to get that fixed :D

What size tyres do the JK run as standard in a Rubicon? around 33's I think....

It seems a standard rubicon comes with a 255/75/17 which is 32.1" tall tyre from factory.
According to current QLD rules you can do a 15mm increase which basically gets you to 33" legally.
Although I am guessing you could run a 35" and get away with it...they don't seem to look that big on a JK anyways.

Now, what height lift can you get away with?
I can't seem to find any info on that at all. The Motor vehicle modifications booklet doesn't really seem to spell it out and neither does the Transport Operations (Road Use Management - Vehicle Standards and Safety) Regulation 1999 that it references either.

QLD rules suck.
You can take a perfectly legal and registered 4wd from VIC and it turns into a dangerous death machine simply by changing the rego over. Makes you think just how bad our roads are compared to other states.

As for bead locks. They too are a no go.
However I have heard of a company (Might even be Staun) who are releasing a rim with two vavle holes, that will be approved for road.
ATM they fail because you need to modify the rim for them to be fitted, if the manufacture does it as above, all should be good.

Here's hoping anyway ;)

Note that some of the rules will change if and when QLD implements the NCOP, but they probably won't change by much.

To answer the specific questions:
- Is it possible to run 35's on road in QLD? NO. +15mm allowed (+25 or +50 with NCOP)
- What about bigger if its engineered, 37's, 39's etc. Bigger tyres cannot be engineered in queensland. (unless you build an ICV etc...)
- Does anyone know a decent engineer? In most cases you need an "Approved Officer", not an engineer. Most of these are mechanics who also do RWCs.
- How about a decent place to do the v8 conversion? ???
- Decent jeep or general 4wd fabricators close to brissy? Bubs on here is in brissie, and does top notch fab work from what I have seen. Lots of happy customers.

I also need to work out what competitions are on up here and the level of driving you can find within 3-4 hours of Brisbane or even closer.

i've got a mate who has just had his spanker 4 door JK plated with (all imported new from the states) a 7L hemi, 4.5" rubicon long arm kit, dana 60's front and rear, atlas II, and the list goes on, don't think the 37 x 13.5's x 18's were plated though :oops: all work was done at hammonds jeep at capalaba ( NOT BLUE PLATED BY THEM THOUGH) so give them a tingle i'm sure they can point youy in the right direction.

there are no specific rules that apply to raising a 4x4. the mod guide states that you can not have any of the sprung mass of a fully ladden vehicle lower then 100mm from the road unless it left the factory that way.

You can not alter the bump clearance in either direction by more then 1/3.
On vehicles with no extension bump stop, the the position of the diff with a fully extended stock shock absorber is counted as the extension bump stop.

You can not alter the bump stops in any way shape or form.

there is no upper limit on height, you can lift it as high as you like PROVIDED YOU STICK TO THE BUMP STOP RULE
