LS1 to Hilux Conversion

Post by josh86 »

Evening,
First post and just joined.

Posting on behalf of my bro in qld who is not as computer savvy as myself. I have hammered the crap out of google and searched these forums far and wide

Just wondering if anyone can point me in the right direction for a LS1 to hilux conversion.
The Hilux is a 2000 Model that was acquired for nothing and is in the middle of project stage, Using a 4runner chassis as well. Originally going for a v6 conversion until his missus recently crashed his SS and is unrepairable
So when an opportunity presents itself like that it just makes sense when everything is lying around collecting dust. Its a VT Gen3 auto 1999 year that already has aftermarket ecu.
Now keep in mind he is not intending on registering the hilux so we get around those pesky engineering issues etc. We have a few friends good with sheet and fabrication so thats not a "major issue" If anyone has completed the conversion the info would be awesome.

Cheers Guys

I'd be guessing it would be the same sort of process as fitting an Injected 5L just different mounts and a lighter engine

Hey guys,
Have been told the ls1 will fit in the lux engine bay with slight fire wall massaging. I am doing a harness ATM for an LS1 into a hilux. If its not regoed dont have to worry bout mod plate.
You will need to change to a rear drop sump, can get them on ebay for around $450.
Wiring harness will need to be modified, I can do these if you are interested, depending on what type of aftermarket ECU is used (personally i would get rid of the aftermaket ECU and run the factory one with a re-flash)
Will need to adapt a gearbox / transfer case
Will need to constuct engine mounts
Will need custom extractors, And possible re-locate the alternator to clear chassis rails.

hi my name is derek and i am friends with the owner of Japanese 4x4 spares and repairs and he did a conversion to a hilux surf and he had to gat an aftermarket ignition adapter kit coz the original wiring has to recognise a key signature before it would start, i would be able to chase down some info on the ingnition adapter kit i'll just need a bit of time.

and as for the sump, there is a factory 308 sump that will fit without getting in the way of ur steerting arms. so just go to a holden wreckers and find out.

Are you sure? I wouldn't think that the holden 308 sump would fit the chev.

hey dexter you know you can just send the computer away and pay about $50 and have all the security taken off it? thats what we did in my brothers ls1 75 series.
also i highly reccomend killalux for wiring. had a harness of his in the cruiser and its top quality.

308 sump won't fit an ls1.
get on ebay and find a rear hump sump. between 350 and 450 bucks

as mentioned above, i can get security disabled in the ecu for $50.

Why run aftermarket crap when GM spend huge amounts of hours and money tuning there computer, and you can just alter a few things and make great HP and a engine that still runs sweet.

In the process of doing this too, biggest problem is that the LS1 crank is set back further into the block, that's why the Marks 80 series kit has that stupid twin flywheel/flexplate setup ( And yes, I've seen two of them let go now)

I think I've nutted out an easy (And safe) way of doing it.
I have to speak to Ross (Ross Balancers) next week bout making a critical little part and it should bolt almost straight in where your Chev/Holden V8 once was using the stock throwout fork, and clutch slave and master cylinder.

If it works like I think it will, I'll be producing a kit that any half competent guy can put in his fourby over a weekend.

Just need to collect some more parts to cut up
(Old 11" and 12" clutch plates and covers mainly and a stock LS1 throwout bearing)

Does anybody have a shagged LS1 clutch and pressure plate & Bearing I can use for dummy fitment ?

You can get the rear hump sumps from Auto one now for $350 brand new... Too bad I forked out for the modified marks adapters one already.
