27meg radio's-is it worth having?

Post by 43som »

Just after an opinion.
I have an am set which came with the car, but have put a uhf in.
Still got the am set, and it'll cost me next to nothing to put it in and functional.
I know a couple guys that go out pigging out west use them.
Besides having private comunications with someone else who has one, (lack of people using them), is it worth it?
Or just a waste of space?

cheers

Waste of space, nearly everyone uses UHF as it is better and has clearer communications, even the truckies now use ch40 UHF

as for 27megs in general these days the only channel that still gets used is ch35 LSB as for the rest of the old call channels on 27megs they are dead...

That's why you get one with CTCSS and then you don't have to listen to dick heads.

I did have the thought of people going back to them, but you don't know who's got one, cause you wouldn't be scanning the 27mz anyway.

Continuous Tone Coded Squelch System

It's a code you can use on any channel with people in your party only and it filters out any other transmissions that are on the same channel.

We use 27MHz in our club, we always get a channel to ourselves, no need to worry about everyone in a 20km radius talking shit over the top of you. Mind you, we talk enough shit of our own...

27meg works a lot better in shitter terain,
uhf is really only good for line of sight when it comes to range,
all the loging trucks still use 27meg in national parks because of the range in the hilly terain i am told
i will always keep both options in my truck may never know when u could need to get in touch with someone and it just give you another option

I've got one which came with the 40. I was going to ditch it and bung in a UHF, but I think I'll keep it in there and just use the 5 watt handheld UHF for flash for cash updates and short range comms.

As stated above, the range of 27MHz in complex terrain is way better than UHF - the old AMs are cheaper to buy too ;)

Problem with that is not many people there to hear it...

I agree re the range comments. Especially compared to handheld UHFs. I have an old uniden with SSB - 1.8 m aerial (also doubles as a dune flag ;) ).

The range is great - but range on SSB is patchy.

well. on sat at work i fitted mine up. took 15min's.
Then one my customers came in who runs both and gave me a radio check and it's all sweet.
But i have done a couple more radio checks and have actually gotten responses.

I also dug up on the net the list f channels for use. trucks, emergency etc.
I also got the uhf channel list too, also the emergency freq's for the gme's.

i'm keeping it, and like said, putting a flag on the end of the a/e
