Speaker Wire for Power Cable?

Post by bigbluemav »

Hi All

I scored some of that really thick speaker wire (copper is about 8mm thick!!) with clear insulation.

I can seperate it, so could I use it as power cable?

Yes. I suggest getting some red & black heatshrink - slip a short length over each end, to indicate +ve or -ve circuit.

Edit: ELV - 12V / 24V stuff. Don't use it for anything higher voltage.

Ta Scott

I've split and used one half as the power to the fuse box (the cig lighters run off the fuse box). I've earthed the cig lighters and will do the same with any other stuff that I wire to the fuse box.

Be aware that the insulation may be a lot thinner and softer and more liable to be abraded away in high vibration environments.
