Good Electronic/HEI Ignition for Holden Red 308.
Looking for decent spark for a red 308 on straight gas, what are the good setups out there?
I've heard of retro fitting Bosch gear from VL era Commodores, is that a decent setup?
There's HEI distributors with 'coil in cap' type setups on ebay for $70, surely they're rubbish??
What are the other options?
Cheers.

It seemed like a much better idea when I started it than it does now.

The bosch Electric dizzy set up is quite good. They come on any blue motor onwards eg WB/VH commodore up to VL.Wendle wrote:Looking for decent spark for a red 308 on straight gas, what are the good setups out there?

Im here for the sausage!
Years built and installed a Jaycar kit on an engine which was forever burning points. It was a relatively simple kit to build, simple to install, and used the original points to signal the electronics module, which then fired the coil. I installed connectors everywhere, so I could easily bypass the electronics and revert to standard ignition - not that I ever had to.
The car instantly became easier to start, and I only ever had to adjust the points when the rubbing block wore down.
Ended up building a kit for a mate's XW, too.
All my cars how have EFI, so it's no longer an issue, but if I ever again end up with a car which has points, I'll build another kit.

I have one of the cheap ebay jobbies on my HZ and so far it's working fine, a mate has had one on in his 350 HQ Coupe for 2 years without any problems.
For $70.00 what have you got to lose?
It'll cost more than that to get a Blue motor Bosch rebuilt and they have a nasty habit of modules playing up.

I wouldn't touch the Pro Comp stuff, thyey are $9 China made distributors and at best are hit and miss, low output and erratic timing. The origional HEI distributors mentioned are great but OEM parts are no longer available, the ICE is the highest output, billet distributor, module and coil. A lot more spark duration than MSD which goes from mutispark to single spark at about 3000 rpm due to lack of coil charge time.
