Air Cond

Post by rocknferoza »

Does the airconditioning in your feroza/rockyt get icey cold :?:
My aircon is clicking on but isn't getting cold  I had it checked about 2 years ago and got the gas topped up. Only needed 5 grams or something like that and was also told it was getting down to 6 degrees.
I don't believe it was getting that cold.
Any ideas what could be wrong :?:

Thanx

Sounds like a problem i've just had. While driving along at highway speeds it's fine but as soon as you get into traffic at walking speed the air started to warm up. Found that the condenser fan wasn't coming on at low speed like it should. The computer wasn't sending a signal to the fan switch to turn it on so i used the switch wire from the aircon clutch to run the fan. Now it works perfect.

James, try removing all your grill etc and get a high pressure hose and hose all the condensor out. You'll probably find a lot of mud/ dust comes out. This should help it work better.

Also check the condensor fan comes on when the aircon is on.

Mine is icy cold and some days I have to turn it off for a while so I can defrost. Hope you sort the problem out soon...nothing worse than having air con that isn't working properly

I can relate to that- had the Feroza for 12mths before I finally got mine working..... I now know a lot about Feroza air con systems. :D

Another aircon question (I'm not trying to hijack the thread  )- how noisy is everyone else's compressor at idle? Mine on hot days sounds like there's some marbles loose inside!?

Here's a good link for identifying aircon parts too: http://www.jayair.com.au/front.htm . I had all the fun in the world trying to get the correct receiver drier and expansion valve for mine- about a week later I found that site, it would have saved me a lot of headaches!

That's reassuring to know- I was beginning to worry. A new compressor is around $700 so I was just going to keep using it until it died anyway!

Do you get a really noticeable power loss when the compressor kicks in too? It seems to be a lot worse than any other car I've owned?

I just thought it was a standard daihatsu thing. I have thought about taking the car into a air con specialist to make sure everything is ok with my set up just haven't had time (just a bit worried about the guy who fixed the condensor last) but seeing that someone else is having hte problem I am not to concerned now

My compressor is noisy too but I can't hear it over the stereo

Mine has an amusing little problem now where the belt is old/ loose and when accelerating reasonably hard the belt slips a little. The rather big power loss attributed to air con kicks in and out and the little rig has power surges as the belt slips and grips again

Imagine turning the air on and off really quickly the whole time the engine is under load.... it's like that

I have to regularly drive through a 25km/h zone- as the aircon cuts in and out the car actually bogs down and then accelerates. Makes it fun trying not to speed when the aircon cutting out easily makes a 5km/h increase in no time.

Mines not cooling when idling, but fine once the revs are up a bit.

I turn it off when I want to overtake uphill, kinda like a push button turbo! *air con off..floor it* *air con on back to cruising* :D

When I first got my Feroza, it also had a very noisy rattling noises coming from the AC compressor. Had it checked out under warranty, dealer said they will replace it when it died. 3 1/2 years went and it never gave me a problem. Noisy, but it worked great. Better than what the Patrol has in my opinion.

Good to hear mine is "normal" now then! :D

Rod my inlaws have got a GQ Patrol and it's aircon is very good- perhaps your's needs re-gassing? Maybe try hosing out the condensor like I suggested for James to try? If it's blocked and not getting cool air over it the aircon won't work very well.

I know what you mean about the "turbo" button Murray- taking off from lights flat out you certainly know when the compressor cuts out. :D Most EFI systems cut out the aircon compressor when the accelerator is floored, strange the Ferozas don't too? It would be handy if it did.

AC UNITS

Post by yoda »

Just a litle note. Feroza II the ac swiches of on acceleration if it dies not something is wrong. As for no AC in Idle and low speed normaly one of two problems 1 short of gas as the engin runs at lower revs It will be warmer than at high speed but it should still cool. 2 the compressor has lost some of its capasity to pump (shot rings).
How to check if your system is short of gas: ontop of the reciever (aluminium cylender in front of radiator) has a small glass sight use a torch when ac is operational there should be no bubles visible note this will only be working if ac still works as if you have lost to much gas the system not have any refrigerant in liquid state and it will apear to have no bubles but it is actualy empty. To check the compressor take it to the shop and have them test it.
As for blocked condensors the unit should have a High presure swich that cuts out the compressor if the pressure gets to high henc no cooling. It is not good to wait for the swich to operate as more often than not they dont work. Every 3 months or so take to the coil (condensor) with a garden hose dont use high pressure as it will damage the coil and could even cause a leak.
Hope this helps you guys and dont forget if you get stuck an refrigeraion questions just ask thats wat frigies are there for.
Cheers Yoda.

Just one question. Is the condenser fan on Feroza II's supposed to come on with the aircon or not? I seem to remember a wiring diagram that shows its linked to a speed sensor and the main computer.

F II Fan

Post by yoda »

Yes All makes and models of all cars the condensor fan runs if the AC is turned on If it is not going the car will overheat and the unit will go out on safety (HP Cutout) Dont forget these units condensors can reach tempretures of 60C in secconds if the fan is not going higher if the hp safety fails, with fan normaly 35 to 45C

Are you sure about that Yoda?

Does anyone else's aircon cut out like that?

Mine seems to cut out once I stop at lights and the like... on, off, on, off. Solution: apply handbrake and use accelerator to up the revs to 1k.... :D

You can adjust the aircon idle separately to the normal idle speed- there's a valve arrangement sitting on the side of the inlet manifold with a white plastic hex knob on it. Winding this in or out will change the idle speed with the aircon on. :D

Well I'm currently searching through it- but there's no dedicated aircon section.

Pin 23 of the EFI ECU is labelled "airconditioner magnetic clutch" which goes to the "Aircon Amplifier" black box. The manual says that it should be +12v when
aircon is on, the engine running and compressor rotating
The factory compressor appears to have some sort of signal generator in it to feedback that it's rotating- so that's appears to just be a signal from the Aircon Amplifier to tell the EFI ECU the compressor is engaged. There are no other wires running between the two.

Going by that I'd say the factory aircon isn't supposed to cut out at full throttle, Murray and my experiences would also indicate that to be the case.

Is your aircon the same as the factory kit Yoda? How is the aircon cut out activated?
