blows smoke ONLY on down hill idle

Post by andy1517 »

hey guys,

have noticed recently that when idling down steep hills (engine braking) or going up really steep hills, my 1./3 zook blows a lot of white smoke. It is definately oil, and wondering why it does this?

Is this a common problem, and what is it most likely to be?

1.3ltr 94 zook.

i have heard of these.

What is the best way to get to these.
What's involved?

Should anything else be done whilst i'm doing this?

on a related note (blowing smoke)

whats thoughts on a nice thick cloud of white (not blue) smoke on a cold start??? only on the first few RPM of the engine.

Setup is EFI 16v injectors on jimny head to 1.6 carby bottom end.

No oil in coolant and no coolant in oil (so its not leaky head gasket).

I was thinking it might be related to the EFI's choke system or maybe dirty injectors but it still wouldnt explain white smoke. It doesnt smell like oil either - its got a very odd smell, kind of like the smell of welding...

Can reproduce it every time on a cold or semi-cold (not used for an hour or two) start. Colder starts have more smoke though.

That sounds like valve stem seals as well. While the engine is sitting oil runs down the valve guides into the inlet port and burns away when the engine starts.

Replacing valve stem seals isn't really a job for the average bloke to do at home. Best off asking a local workshop for a quote. It can be done with the head on but you need the right tools to pressurise the cylinders and remove valve springs. If you get this job wrong you'll have to pull the head off!

spot on answer, also if you have the head off at the same time it might be a good idea to get the valve guides replaced, valve seats re lapped and the head surfaced ground, then you know you head is spot on

Sounds like you've broken some rings! A compression check would show that up. Might be time for a new (or upgraded!) engine.
