4L60E repair cost ??

Post by brooksy »

I bought a wrecked '02 VYSS ute for the LS1 to go into my 40 but the SS had a 6 speed which I sold to a bloke. He has a 4L60E that has a rooted 2nd gear that he is willing to sell to me.
My question is does anybody know how much roughly it would cost me to get this auto repaired. Any ideas would be appreciated because he has left me open to offer him what I think it's worth but the repair cost is the problem.

A 4L60E isn't known as being a strong box. It is however upgradable.

You'd be best calling your local transmission shop and asking how much for a changeover box for your commodore would be.

I can't see his stuffed 4L60 being worth much.

I intend on getting it upgraded so I thought if I could get this 1 for say $250 max it would be better than paying $6-700 for 1 that I have no idea on condition & I was going to get the upgrade in anyway
I figure changing out the 2nd gear at the same time wouldn't be a big cost at the time of the re-build

Autos dont quite have a second gear as such, they rely on clutches through planetry gearsets. Its the clutches and bands that slip causing it to not be able to select a gear ( among other problems). That said it cost me $2000 a few years ago to get a 4L65E repaired and that didnt include any clutches.

If you are thinking of spending up to 6-7k then you should start with a 4L80E, they are about $3500 and good for about 550hp stock. Upgraded they can support 1000 hp.

$6-700. Meaning $600 - $700. :D

I can get a Powerglide for $2,500-$3,000 that is good for 750+HP
I am not after rediculous HP for the 40. The LS1 is never going to be tuned above 350kW or 470HP
It is currently 300kW which will probably be more than enough. I was just going to get the upgrade kit just for reliability reasons & the fact that I will be starting with a fresh auto so to speak.
I will make some ph. calls tomorrow, just thought someone might have had some experience on the matter to compare pricing.

it may be an easy fix, like the 2/4 servo seals.
may be a solenoid
or the reaction shell might be gone. aswell as the 2/4 band

its a cheap fix, but you have to pull it apart first .

If you take it to a tranny builder they will put you over the barrel for a full rebuild :)

Thanks Jes,

So you reckon $250 is fair & try my luck ?
I have tried to search for PDF on re-build to do myself but can't find anything. You have any suggestions on where to look ?

I just had my 4l60 rebuilt (vn box) I replaced all of the 3rd & 4th gear clutches, put in a stronger reator shell & a few other bit & pieces plus the full GSR kit & it cost me about $500 just in parts & I got them through work.
it's never a problem until it can't be fixed, even then it' only a minor set back

Would I be able to get those prices croozy, or is that pretty much the norm for parts cost ?

i reakon start from 150-200 is what it should be worth

you can always get a working V6 one for parts, or a full rebuild kit from ebay is about 270.
