Unimog Portal Boxes on Light weight Axles?

Just wondering if any one here has put the 406 portal boxes onto a different axle and how they went about it? mine are going on a zook sierra only for comp use and I was wondering if any one in the Eastern States does this as not many people want to touch them here in W.A., My main reason for doing this is to bring the weight down as complete mog axles are blooody Heeavy (just ask my pooper valve). I know a few of the boys in tuff truck have done this and would like to do the same

MalV has nissan centres with Mog portals and Pete Antunac has 9" centrees with hummer portals on one of his buggies. You can do it, just need to make custom axels to suit.

I would be inclined to use the whole 406 if that is what you have. They are mega strong and the weight is all unsprung.

I've seen 2 buggies use Toyota axles with portals. One used Diamond housings and I cant remember what housing the other used. When jbell was over last year for the Tin Benders Jambo he may have taken some pictures of the setups?

go to verriers eng and speak to craig if your in wa, hes about the only 1 here that mite be willing to do those mods, or my self if you can hook me up with the gear :D

not sure about zook diffs, but would you consider toyota axles.... these can be built very strong for their size and weight.... also are zook axles full floating or semi?

toys, or ford 9's

i think that marks adaptors do a kit for portals on nissan diffs maybe going that way is an option?

Now doing general fab work and painting
trays, trailers, engine swaps on request, some tube work, silo section sliders, rust repairs, ute chops etc

Marks portals for $16000 not really a good option unless your loaded

All the zook drive train has gone!!!! I'm gonna chop the rear end off and tube it, move the new windsor 302 and C4 as far back as I can to keep the transfer case centre to the whole project so the rest is up to me :armsup: I just need info on whos done it so I can pick thier brains out :twisted:

What is the heavy part of the diff?

I don’t know much about 406's, but I have had a bit to do with 404

A 404 bare housing is about the same weight as a Toyota bare housing,

The diff centre is a little bit heavier than a Toyota, but there wouldn't be 10kg's in it

Each portal is about the same weight as the diff, I think this is where your extra weight is coming from.

And you have the brakes onto of that.

The problem with portal diff when you lift them they want to keep rolling over which makes them awkward to handle.

How much weight do you think you will drop by grafting the portals on to housing?

I thought (I could be wrong) that Mal and Pete change the centres because of the ability to change diff ratio, and the availability of spare part

I'm sure Pete went with his custom axels because the Hummer portals were lighter and maybe stronger than the 404 version. He couldn't use the whole Hummer set up cause they are IFS/IRS, I think.

The most cost effective option would be to keep them as they are. After that, using whatever you can get cheap or for free. You will need to get lockers and custom axels made along with doing the cut'n'shut.

Lots of coin that may not really need to be spent?

I was thinking of putting 9' diffs in mainly for parts as its hard enough to get the bloody things in let alone chase spares for the buggers, every wrecker in Australia has a 9' floating around some were, and i'm not to sure on the track of the axles. I saw Lowie's thread on his and he got his converted to discs, does any one know who's doing this kit as I wouldn't mind getting my hands on a couple of them too.

I am not sure on the overall cost.

I know it cost $800 to get the splines cut, then you are still up for the maching and material for the hub, mounting brackets, rotor, calipers.
