TD42T GU wagons can be had from $17,000, and you can get an already kitted out one for $26,000 (i just checked CarPoint for those prices). There's even some with reasonably low km's (sub 200k).

You will buy a good series three or a high mileage series four for that money.
The ZD30 is really your only option. Petrols are too heavy on fuel and the 4.2 is too expensive to buy and are also thristy.
Reliability is not longer an issue with the ZD30. I have a 2004 GUIV for work with 370,000kms on it and it hasn't been touched.

ZD30's are more economical than TD42's?? I dont think so.
The ZD30/TD42 thing has been done to death (or should i say destruction ).

car weighs like 2800kgs as i carry all my tools around everyday aswell as recovery gear..

Shit eh - i thought it was pre 2003 that were going kaboom. Not too keen on gettin one thats gona go up in smoke and i know that wont impress the mrs eitha. She starting to doubt gettin a patrol at all now leaning towards a prado.

im not going to lie the 3l is a quik motor my mums got one and it flys when you put the boot in it.. im buying a boost and pyro for her tho as they do alot of towing..
One dud engine model shouldn't put you off. Prado's and Patrols are two different beasts. At least be consistent and factor in an 80 series or something.
People need to move on and not dwell on the past. Most people who bag the ZD30 have never owned one and don't know what they are on about. Sure there have been issues but name me an engine which hasn't had it's problems. The important thing is that it has been acknowledged by Nissan.
I have owned three TD42's and currently have my fourth ZD30. I would never own a TD42 again. They were a good engine in their day (ie. last century) but they certainly aren't worth the extra $$$$$. If we don't move with the times we would all still be driving Patrols fitted with P40 engines which also was a very good engine.
