Hi all. I did the obligatory search for upgrading turbo on a 1HDT but no suitable responses/threads popped up so I'm asking here.
A mate of mine purchased a 4.2 GU Pootrol with a brand new upgraded Turbo on it (Denco branded Schwitzer S2A Turbo) and promptly upgraded it so I have the option to buy it cheap. He reckons it bolts straight on with the exeption that I will need a modified exhaust flange and I was thinking that it might be an upgrade form the factory turbo on my 1HDT.
It doesn't look much bigger (if any) than the standard Tojo unit and I'm not looking for a huge power increase just a modest upgrade would be good as I don't wish to lose any bottom end grunt.
Anyone done such a turbo swap? Any experiences you would care to share?

Perhaps there is some scope for a bit of a faq/bible page on playing with the different range of CT26 turbos and the results, atleast all the ct26 parts will definately bolt together and fit in the factory spot!

From memory, when everything is off the motor, , there are two studs in the head (rest are bolts) which hold the rear half of the exhaust manifold. To start to install, you hang the rear section on the head, and bring the longer front section to it, but inside the longer front section is a sealing ring that has to stay in place. With your right hand, you need to support the front manifold against the back manifold so it doesnt loose the ring, with your left, you need to lift turbo up from the engine mount and onto the studs, gasket and all, and get a nut started to hold it....it cant be done when manifold is against head or water pipe on block stops turbo install...so manifold needs to be held out a touch...PITA The air conditioning compresser gets in the way and if i did it again, would remove and swing forward.
Turbos hdt has smallest turbine housing, meaning best boost down low. hdft has a larger housing (same internal fans) so its boost comes on later (hdt is 1800 max torque, hdft is 2000) but hdft makes more power at revs.
Supra turbine housing is larger again (same turbine as hdt/hdft) but supra grew a larger compresser (44mm as opposed to 38 for hdt/ft) Supra front wheel can be bolted on hdt/ft turbos by changing front cover to supra aswell, this changes the waistegate position somewhat, as the supra runs a different waistegate, drilling and tapping one hole gets it working with std hdt waistegate.
Interestingly, the latest turbo on the hdfte 100 series is comparable in size to a hdt turbo with a supra front wheel. they make max torque quite low in rev range.

Simmo, I would suggest you try and get hold of a CT26 turbo (in going order or not) put it side by side with your mates turbo and compare the housings, flanges, orientation oof inlet/outlets, waste gate actuators etc.
It may be similar, but even if the exhaust flange has same pattern, the chance of it being a"bolt in" is not good.
There is buggar all clearance around the stock turbo, so if things like waste gate actuators are aligned differently, it could be require customising brackets etc.
As Dow50r says, just getting the std turbo off is a PITA, fitting up a non-standard will be a challenge. The std turbo is obviously bolted to the engine assembly on a production line before it goes into the car.
