4.2 into RB 30 which diff would you use

Post by johno »

Well got my rex Hunt Special ;) Now I reckon i'll bring my 4.2 turbo diesel home and drop it in. Have all the 4.2 stuff so don't need to chase anuthing, I hope. Have had some great tips from 80lsy gq. He left the RB 30 diffs in his and changed flanges.

I can go that way or use my 4.2 diffs. Its more an every day truck, some 4 wd not heavy stuff like you blokes get up to. Pulling a boat now and again same with a horse float. Mostly just normal camping gear etc for longer trips.

Soooo which diffs??????

what size tires are you going to be running,
The rb30 has 4.3 diffs and the td42 runs 4.1 if you are going to run standard tires you night find diesel reving about 300 rpm higher than normal, so it will depend on how you feel it drives, you can get away with it,

Johno i left my RB30 centres in so i could run the 4.3 ratio..after driving it for a bit with 33' tyres it sits very comfortably on 100km/h and towing it pulls good in either 5th or 4th gear..as Shawn said it would make a little difference to the fuel consumption by using 4.11 but i am quite happy with the setup now..

the other reason i left them in was i used the RB30 tailshafts and just changed the flanges on the transfer case as it was also easier as i didnt have the larger flanges for the pinion or the tailshafts off the 4.2 either
