60 series, going from 31" to 33" tyre

Post by RockyF75 »

Need to make a descision fairly quickly, I run 31"s at the moment. Doing most of my k's on highway trips with short trips around town. I need new tyres and am thinking of going for 33's for the extra height offroad, and for the longer legs on the freeway.

But what I want to know from other owners is if they had any adverse affects going to 33"s, like more fuel consumption, noticeable loss of power, etc??

Its a turboed too 2H for reference.

it'll be noticed around town and on the hills.
it'll still be driveable but 1st gear will be used alot more for taking off.

fuel economy will go up but depend on what style 33 to how much.

Mine went up a 1L/100kms but i went to a set of wide 33" mtzs.

Got 2h Turbo and 35's only a biatch around town taking off from lights, towing another cruiser on trailer, or really steep inclines.

31's are for Jeeps go 33's they will be fine and get some extra diff and u-bolt plate clearance in the process!
I'm not quitting drinking, I'm retiring at the top of my game - sporting comeback likely.

33's will be fine, heaps longer legs and i didnt notice the fuel consumption at all which means it didnt make that much of a difference. didnt affect the power too much, i run 35's for off road and u fell the power decrease a lil bit, but my 2H is non turbo thou

Who doesn't use first gear to take off?

You will notice it, less because you have a turbo.

If I'm on flat or a downhill I sometimes start off in 2nd, cause 1st is to damn low. Gets annoying especially in traffic.

Thanks for the replies.

32" are pretty much the standard size for the 60 anyway so 33" isn't much bigger. 32s go fine on our non-turbo 2H 60. 33s should be sweet on a turbo 2H, even 35s would roll OK, but fuel effiency would go to crap. Go 33s.

Well I won't fit 35's with the current set-up and they aren't really in my plans at the moment anyway.

33's and f+r lockers should keep me doing pretty much any track I want and still be streetable.

33z are great with a turbo 2H, gearing is perfect IMO.

Got 33's on my non turbo 60 and they are fine, they are near as dammit the same rolling diameter as 7.50's which are what most 60's are meant to wear anyways, no appreciable change in ecconomy, they do touch with axle articulation but I am running a 2 inch lift only.

Yeh I agree, I found them to be spot on when I had my 60. Did an 8000km round trip to Alice Springs, Flinders Ranges etc and it was awesome! A little bit more power would have been handy for overtaking triple road trains though!

I've found the same. With 31's speedo read high by about 7km/h, and with 34's about 5km/h low, which would make 33s about spot-on. 34's actually gear it a bit high for my liking, requiring breaking on steep descents that wasn't necessary before, and being noticeably slower on highway ascents. I carry a ton of gear standard too, so this also has an effect.

The 2H can smell a hill at 10 km and it slows down in anticipation

LOL, imagine driving with the 205R16's (28.5" ish) that the early 60's came with!
