One Spark Plug Covered in Oil?

Post by eXc »

Hey Guys

Anyone able to help me out with suggestions?

G16B Vitara

Car started running rough as guts randomly the other day, Spark at dizzy is good. Then I thought it was just an exhaust gasket cause of the way it sounded, but it wasn't. Pullled the plugs out, all are fine except one, closest to firewall, is COVERED in oil, it was dripping off it when I pulled it out.

Has not been using heaps of oil - maybe 500ml every 5000kms, but there is a fair bit through the back of the engine/top of gearbox. Only just changed the oil last week.

It started running rough while I was driving it Sunday morning, I have only driven it ~10kms home since it happened.

Any ideas if it is just the seals or if it's rebuild time? Research on net generally suggested it was seals, but other people reckon it was rebuild time. Anyone had this before on a zook?

Cheers

Is spark getting to the plug?
Is there a gap?

my guess is the tappet cover is leaking around the plug tube and the oil was sitting on top of the plug before you undid it. if it was dripping off the plug inside the cylinder it would be blowing huge amounts of smoke and drinking oil like petrol.

I ended up replacing the spark plug seal and valve cover seal. This has not fixed the problem...

I just took it to a mechanic that doesnt have time to look at it, but reckons it's an electrical problem and the oil in the plug was unrelated.

To me it looks like it is getting good spark.

I'll try to find a lead to swap it with to test, failing that I guess I'll let a mechanic take a look.

I'll try yet another one, every mechanic i take my car to , I regret taking it to them,

If it is getting good spark, time to try a compression test.

Looks like the oil issue was unrelated.

The issue with the rough running was the plug leads were shorting out to the engine, taped up, now working...

Time will tell if the oil issue is resolved by me changning the seals.

You might find it was from filling the engine up with oil, it is easy to spill a little and have it run down into the sparkplug hole

yeah could have been!

Either way, the oil was not the problem as such, so it's all good now it would seem :)

Thanks for all the advice
