BJ73 breaking CV's

Post by sava75 »

Hey all,

Yes, I have a BJ73 non turbo 3B with 34 11.5 x 15inch simex and front 'Lokka'. Out of 3 trips I have broken the RH CV twice. On both occasions it struggled on a rocky hill climb and after 2-3 attempts it went bang. What am I doing wrong? I know its a weak point on Toyota's but maybe its a combination of driver error/ simex lugs (too much traction)?? The front end just seems to bounce way too much.
Should I go for chromoly CV and axle set? Will I start breaking diff centres after that? Or am I just having a little bad luck?

Thanks in advance.

Sam.

the combination of front locker, large rubber and bouncing on loose terrain is whats doing it, when I did similar terrain I just used the rear locker and let the front do its thing as a open diff. Never any problems.

Go longfields and never look back.

Auto locker could be an issue as well. They're pretty rough on the driveline constantly locking and unlocking. A mate constantly breaks cv's in a GQ with an auto locker. And only running 33's as well. I break my share of cv's in my Middy running 35 MTR's but 6.1 diffs with 13BT+auto.
If you don't want to upgrade to an air locker then chromoly is pretty much the only option.

heard about your predicament savva...saw the pics too.....seriously, Ive seen your truck do harder tracks before, and Im surprised you busted a CV on that track.

Savva....send an email to LockdUp 4x4........heres a link its for a 60series front CV, not sure how much different it is from a 73 middy, but it gives you an idea atleast -

These have been tested to 5,600ft/lbs where the stock axle shaft broke but the cv remained intact. A stock CV will suffer bell failure at 4,000 ft/lbs.

These cv's come with a 2 year warranty for vehicles running upto 35" tyres with standard Toyota OEM engines
Im sure there are others available but its a start.

Ah Gordie you're alive and kicking, good to see

Don't know a great deal. . . . . . BUT . . . . . . .
Since we changed the 40's front end to a GQ, we haven't broken a CV in 4 years playing on 36's and 39's :D

But i still break them in the middy

thanks everyone for your info and assistance. please keep the comments coming.
I am now weighing my options and will contact locktup soon.

P.S Maxxi, that was definately the worst hill my middy has been on. I was very happy i got that far up!

I will go back and try again after some mods are done....ie: rear locker, fix brakes, more flex in suspension.

With a detroit locker and 34"JT's/37" claws I used to break CV's like they were made of chalk.

Now with an air locker and longfields, no problems. Haven't given it a really hard time but the aftermarket 4.56 diff gears are holding up fine, despite being the new fuse point.

I honestly think i would have broken far fewer CV's if i just ran the air locker with standard CV's.

What kind of longfield cv's and shafts will fit to FJ73 front diff? I'v been on longfileds web site and found out that they deal only with BJ-40 and 80's font ends.

I have the 40 series super set in my hj75...haven't checked the inner splines to see how deep they are engaging at the diff and didn't get a chance to compare to the original axles...but they seem to work for me and plenty of others!

*change driving style?
*rear lokka?

Changing driving stlye will only help for a while. The toyota CV's are ok but you will always break them. I run longfields with 42 irocs and never broken any. Its well worth the $1000 to buy them. It will cost you less in the long run.
