The real truth about mtz mickey thompson tyres
well guys you might be able to tell from what I’m about to type up here that I’m really unhappy with mtz Mickey Thompson tyres
I brought my tyres about 15,000 kms ago after reading all the stories about them in 4wd monthly and other 4wd mags.
I thought great they seem like a good set of tyres so I went out and brought 5 at $350 each 285/75/16 off I went I was really happy with them at first as in sand they were great mud great and road well let’s say they were ok.
My 4wd a Nissan patrol was not long of the show room floor and only had about 14,000 on her.
Wheel alignment was 100% tyre pressure was at 38psi as per the factory settings for that tyre well so I was told by the fitters.
Anyway to cut the story short I’ve done 15,000kms on them and well have a look at this and you make your own mind up
O and another thing I rang the factory that sells the tyres and they said poo happens pretty much they said there is no warranty on mtzs and pretty much suck it up you brought them?
next to new under 1000kms on this one was the spare 15mm of tread
ok 15,000kms and down to 6mm of tread
when new 15mm of tread

From thier site
40% Road & Sand
60% Dirt & Mud
I'm guessing you didn't read that bit. They are not primarily a road tyre, and will wear accordingly.
Try an all terrain next time (any all terrain).

George Carlin, an American Comedian said; "Think of how stupid the average person is, and realise that half of them are stupider than that".
Quick wear compared to what everyone else gets.
Seems pretty even wear in that picture, without much damage, feathering, abuse etc. Got any more pics? Not doubting you or defending them by the way.
Interested to know how this one ends up as I was leaning towards a set next.

And what are you trying to acheive here, like what is your point? From this poll you've made here that millions of people are going to view, what do you want to achieve?

And
No im just angry because the way he talks about his problem. Does he want to tell the world that he had a bad set of tyre? Is he trying to feel better becos his tyre choice didn't work out? Or does he have something against MT?
There's more than 1 that agrees with me bogged, I just want to know... what is the point?

MTZ
Well Bushy, I would be pissed too. I'm on my third set and had no dramas with wear. Great tyres to date. We have all know of bad batches of tyres regardless of the brand. Make sure you investigate this further and demand answers. Big brands should be held accountable for poor quality. Well thats my soap box effort for the day. Let us know how you go.

i have had a set of 35" mtz's for around two years and done just over 15000 on them. A heap of other blokes i drive with have them and think they are the beeez kneez. I agree that they are a top all-rounder tyre but am a little peeved with how quickly mine have worn compared to other who have had theirs a lot longer and done heaps more k's!!
I am not saying i go easy on them but i certainly dont spin them on the bitumen or thrash them. That said the wear (in my completely uneducated opinion) seems to be crappy rubber. The sidewalls are littered with fine splits, most of the writing has peeled off, tread worn considerably, and seem to have hardened...
i asked the local tyre shop (who i brought them from) but they instantly responded that it would be due to environmental damage. Dont have any pics just at the moment.
If the deterioration is due to driving damage i can accept that and be happy with it but if it is because i happened upon a dud batch i wouldnt be too happy having to replace them in the near future.
all being said I would prob buy them again.

15000 km... so what?
if i get 20000km out of my tyres,i'm happy.
it's all about the circumstances the vehicle is used in.
if you don't like soft, grippy tyres then go buy a set of Coopers bricks.
those things will last forever.
terrible grip,terrible in the wet,understeer,oversteer....
but hey,they last forever.
WHAT WERE YOU EXPECTING FROM THESE TYRES?

Hes like a ghost in the darkness, Ive never seen him but pictured him and made a Voodoo doll of what I think he looks like and I pin him every night.8UFF35T wrote:and Luke... bogged shouldn't scare you, old fart got nothing to do but pick on me .
I want to make a Voodoo Bogged Patrol and pin it in his piston as well but no photos of his Patrol to make one, he has some pics but just random googled ones he found so I may pin a innocents car if I use those to work off.

Re: mtz
Lot of variables in tyre wear and choice etc unfortunately. I'd say holey crap, I had a set of MTR's (315/75x16) on my old 4.8 Patrol and I don't believe I babied them. Sold them with about 5-6mm of tread left after running up 75,000k's. So far the MTZ's I've had seem to be holding up as well.micka1 wrote:Got a set in 35 inch done over 38,000 k on them no problems , reckon i still have at least another 15 to 20k on them and i am hard on tyres . Bout 200 times Better than the 20,000 i got out of a set of 6 MTR goodyears .
Not sure about the original post recommendations of "Wheel alignment was 100% tyre pressure was at 38psi as per the factory settings for that tyre well so I was told by the fitters." I had my first big tyres run at 38psi and my Patrol that handled fine to that point tramlined all over the road and was rough. After investigation I reverted back to close to factory pressures and the truck handled fine again and tyre life was good. I ran 32psi front 36psi rear and from memorry factory is 29 and 34. I only ran up to 38/40 when towing. By the way there is no factory setting for that tyre size.
Bloody hell were do I start lol what a response (O and by the way guys some of this thread is funny as hell)
But anyway I was told by brigstone to run 38psi all round but MT told me 32 all round?
I’ve talked to MT and they don’t want to know me and was told you brought them put up with it?
The patrol is as standard apart from winch mount bar winch and side rails so it’s not in any way over weight.
she’s only 30,000kms old now I brought it new last year it gets serviced every 10,000 and a Wheel alignment every 10,000 too at the same time the tyres are changed around on the car I know that’s a bit much but I do use the 4wd out bush a fair bit and it knocks it out of alignment and as you can guess it’s only had the two done since I brought the tyres one when I got them and the other at 10,000 rotation
I really don’t know why they have worn as much as they have and I’m well pissed that they have and I wont by them again because of it but I suppose I really only started this tread so everyone could make up their own mind as to if they think it’s a reasonable wear to get from what MT say are a radial tyre as claimed by them.
And I would say I’m close to the 40% road and the rest off-road might be 50-50 but that’s still in the range so I’ve done 7500kms off-road and the same on road about
There add
The Baja Radial MTZ is designed for maximum traction off-road and on the blacktop. The new tread blocks are designed to minimise noise, making the MTZ one of the quietest traction tyres available.
