1HDFTE INTO 80 SERIES
1hdfte into 80 series, anyone done that before? By the time i get my 1hdt up to scratch it wouldn't be far off buying a second hand 1hdfte, yes no?
I think the 80 and 79 came out with the 1HDFT and the 100 had the 1HDFTE.
The 1HDFT should be a reasonably straight bolt in fit as the block is the same as the 1HZ. only ancillaries would require a touch up.. Wiring, exhaust etc...
I'd Definitely go a 1HDFTE over reco'ing a 1HDT or 1HZ..

Do you know if the gear box is basically the same? My mates got one of the motors in his 79 ute, mainly wiring and computer etc to fit, would have to use the fly by wire throttle too i spose? I'm hoping it will be pretty straight forward. Where is the fuel pump for these motors, in tank or engine bay, i can't remember seein it.fester2au wrote:Done several times now and several topics have been started covering most issues/options. I don't think the ute gearbox is right for the wagon conversion but I'm goin by memory and not a toyota nut. The layout of the box is different I'm sure so won't easily suit your tunnel. Most conversions are into existing diesels and they utilise the original turbo diesel gearbox. The block is exactly the same as all previous toyota diesels turbo or not so bolt in is straight forward and is mating to gearbox but I believe the turbo box is stronger. not sure how it mates up in petrols. Joff on lcool put a 100 series wagon version I think it was into his 100 series and had the donor box which had different layotu and needed tunnel mods but he was going into petrol.rowenb wrote:Do you know if the gear box is basically the same? The wiring for a ute based engine is much more simplified but of course the ute based motor is less powerful. Layout of the entire engine is traditional in that the fuel pump is still mounted and driven off the motor it just has electronic control. Head layout is almost the same as the Ft in the last of the 80's. Only real difference is the hump in the rocker cover is in the middle not the back and the plumbing runs along the back above the motor. Everything standard on the FTE clears the engine bay of the 80 without modification. The head being the same means all water and oil points are the same. The only hard part of this conversion is the wiring.
Thanks mate, yeah my truck is a factory turbo 1HDT so new motor will fit bell housing hey? Just thinkin what else i need and thought of the brakes as mine's a 92 model so the brakes are pretty average compared to later models. Anyone done later model brake swaps as well?fester2au wrote:I don't think the ute gearbox is right for the wagon conversion but I'm goin by memory and not a toyota nut. Yeah the FTE will bolt straight up to your HDT box. The guy that did mine before I bought it put in a heavy duty clutch but not sure if that's heavier than the original TD clutch of he just went new. Either way a new clutch as you are going to that much trouble in the first place would be a good investment.
Brakes are not really needed and as far as I know mod plating and engineering is also not needed as the motors for all intents and purposes are the same thing just electronic control rather than mechanical. Having said that the early brakes are average at best so the upgrade regardless of what else you are doing is a good thing.
You can get away with just the fronts as rears are not as helpful and you can retain 15" wheels if you are running them. If you pu the larger rears on you must go to 16" wheels. I'm in the middle of doing both ends cause I got the bits cheap enough to warrant doing so and my truck has 17"'s on it

1hdfte...........only the 80 got the 1hdft
You're sounding a lot like my wife!!!!! Unfortunately yes as many other things have sidetracked me and the truck is not needed as a daily driver. In my defence though I am also cleaning up and renovating almost everything underneath as well plus a few other things at the same time.ledgend80 wrote:fester2au are you still doing those brakes
correct. The FT and ute/troopy based FTE and 100 series based FTE are for all intents and purposes externally the same. The FT has a direct path across the rocker cover from turbo to inlet with hump to the back like HDT. The FTE's have the rocker cover hump in the middle so inlet runs around the back with preheater and EGR soliniod in that line so it is like a "U". The FTE in the ute is detuned with heavier pistons, different ECU, different injectors and some variance in the pump which is why the 100 wagon produces more power. I believe the wagon has lighter pistons and this is a lot of the reason it also has the intercooler which the others do not.GO79 wrote:Ruffy wrote:I think the 80 and 79 came out with the 1HDFT and the 100 had the 1HDFTE.
