4.3 diff

Post by GURU »

G'day All,

What are the chances of getting a 4.3:1 rear diff to suit a Paj Gen 2 or Gen 3? From what I can find they were only on oversea's models is that correct?

Just need one CWP

Not according to http://www.outerlimits4x4.com/viewtopic ... sc&start=0

Looks like 4.3 is fairly common in the Gen 3 / Gen 4.

So is there a difference between the Gen 2 and Gen 3 Crown wheel pinions?

I kown the centre side gears are different but is the Diff carrier the same bolt pattern and Pinion similar Shape?

Gen 2 vs Gen 3
Front is the same 8" high pinion so interchangeable.
Rear is different (C&P are not interchangeable) the centres are essentially the same except for the side gears (larger axles on the Gen 3).

Okay, Thanks for that

I need rear only anyway. It's for a Rally style Buggy

Do you know exactly why they are not interchangeable, what the differences actually are?

Could I get a Gen 3 4.3 centre and fit side gears from a Gen 2 cnetre?

The diff is currecntly a welded centre so do you think it is possible to just weld the Gen 2 side gears in a Gen 3 centre?

What have you got and what are you trying to do ?
I did a bit of digging and it seems that the C&P's are interchangeable between live axle Gen 2 9.5" and IRS Gen 3 rear diffs.
Remember there are two sizes of the Gen 2 live axle rear diff 9" & 9.5" the Gen 3 IRS has a 9.5" rear but it is a Salisbury type design.
The part no for a rear 4.90 ratio (C&P) for a Gen 2 2.8TDI (9.5") is MR124858 which is the same part no quoted for a Gen 3 2.8TDI 4.90.
So from that they must be interchangeable.
That means if you have a Gen 2 9.5" rear diff with the standard 4.636 petrol or 4.90 diesel ratio then the 4.30 ratio from the Gen 3 should bolt straight in.

Okay to fill in some missing info

I have a Gen 2 rear diff in a Rally Type Buggy. It was out of a LWB with a 3L V6 and was a 4.88 ratio. which is a 9" CW

I was given a rear factory locked diff housing with a 4.6** ratio out of a pajero but no idea what model. The CWP was interchangeable into the 4.88 centre but the CW was a 9.5" so I had to grind the mounting ring on the diff casing to allow it to fit (it clears everywhere inside the casing). So that is what i'm currently running

Now I need an even taller diff ratio to allow slightly smaller tyres and higher top speed.

I didn't Originally know the Gen 3's were the first of the Full Indepent Pajero's, But Do now

So from what your saying the Gen 3 CWP with bolt into the 9.5" housing so I should "Theoretically" be able to get any of the ratio's (3.9, 4.1, 4.3, etc) and fit into my centre going on the fact I have a 9.5" 4.6 in a 9" 4.88 diff assmebly?

Interesting and off topic....
Two things -

You are saying the smaller diff centre bolts up to the 9.5 inch ring gear?
Maybe the only difference in the 9 inch and 9.5 inch centres is to accomodate the larger axles.

Did you have to take much off the mounting ring?
The big 9.5 rear diff is a real hang up in rutty conditions and if you got it to fit the smaller housing easily then that is not a silly option.

Got any pics .. the bigger CWP into the smaller housing sounds like a very worthwhile mod ...

Yes going by the 4.90 C&P part number which is the same for Gen 2 9.5" and Gen 3 9.5" they should be interchangeable so you have the choice of 3.90, 4.10 & 4.90. However I don't know anyone who has actually done it so you would be a pioneer for this mod.
Let us know if you decide to try and how it goes.

Also fitting the 9" C&P onto the 9.5" centre is not really an upgrade in strength per se as they are very similar in size & thickness anyway.
The 9" C&P is very strong on it's own the weak point is the 28 spline 30.5mm diameter axles.
And I would agree that the 9.5" centre was designed purely to accept a 31 spline 33.5mm diameter axle there is just not enough meat to wire cut the 28 spline side gears to accept the 31 spline axles.
Mark Hardman looked at this for me and said it's just not possible and that's why Mitsi designed the 9.5" centre so they could upgrade the axle size/spline.
NJ is correct in saying that the 9.5" assembly is tough as (C&P, diff centre & axles) the downside is the loss of clearance compared to the weaker 9" assembly. It may not be much on paper but offroad it is very noticeable.

Cheers Frank, do you know of any measurement of the diff housing diameter between the two - ie how much more ground clearance can you gain by putting a 9.5 into a 9 housing? Might only be 5-6mm so hardly worth the while.

The weak point on the factory 9.5 inch now moves to the locker setup which I have now replaced with the ARB unit, so now providing the rear axles are good bit stronger than the 28 spline ones I should ahve a pretty tough rear end.

I think it's about 10mm difference.
I really noticed the difference especially in mud where clearance is a huge factor on tracks I know well.
Still I'd rather have the strength though.
I did try and fit a 9.5" centre into a 9" housing - it doesn't fit.
The 3.5" axles are also a bit longer overall than the 3.0 (maybe 0.75" or so).
It would be a worthwhile mod if you had a 3.5 and could get a cheap 9" housing and fit it yourself but as I said it doesn't fit anyway.
If you drive a lot of mud and ruts it will certainly help.
My 9" with 35"s didn't have as much clearance as a Tojo 8" with 35"s but was much better than a Patrol 9.75" and Cruiser 9.5" on 35"s.

Ok I think Bitsamissin has answered everyones question, But 'll explain what I did

I got the 9.5" 4.6** CWP set and fitted/ Bolted it to the original 9" diff centre and diff carrier (LSD Section). I then ground about 7mm (roughly) off the mating ring on the diff casing and fitted the centre with the stock 9" axles. I Can take pictures when I pull the diff centre out to "attempt" to fit Gen 3 gears if you like

Now my only other question before I start to pull out the diff is, where can I get Gen 3 diff ratio's/diffs from in the Sydney area? if not in sydney is there anywhere in Aust that will ship?

Reason for my asking was I was thinking you could use a 9 inch housing, 9 inch ring gear on a 9.5 inch centre to run the larger axles (as according to the info here, that will bolt together).

No doubt you would have looked at doing this.

No I hadn't actually, Don't have any strength issues doing the rally style stuff, nothing to bind up on, also not as much weight transfer and bouncing as it would be in a normal pajero. Also the buggy only weights 1000kg
