Which clutch for turbo?

Post by hokey »

hey,

seeing as the search function is pretty useless i thought i'd just start another thread.

i want to hear from people who have had a turbo TB 42 in the patrols and what sort of clutch theyre running?

i have to change the clutch in my lwb asap and will be turbo'ing it soon so want to get a decent clutch.

will the safari tuff be strong enough with a turbo? any other options? 4 terrain or extreme?

look forward to hearing from people with some experience on the matter.

G'day mate.

I just replaced my clutch in the Mav RB30et, replced it with a Safari Tuff, but a Different Pressure plate, more Clamping pressure.

Apparantly i wont be able to make enough power to ever spin it  .

Go to Better Brakes in Bayswater, and have a chat to Paul, tell him Chris sent you down, and explain to him what you want from the Truck, he will be only to happy to sell you the right parts :D

this is not a valid reason for being lazzy.
there is nothing wrong or hard about using the search function.
search the nissan for TB42+turbo+clutch

it only returns 70 pages of results, it would take you maybe 20mins to pick out a hand full of threads from those 70 pages that will help you.

that will get you an answer FASTER then starting a new thread and waiting for other people to spoon feed you.

Got a custom built clutch , figured if I'm gunna spend that much on a turbo why skimp on the clutch . Direct clutch services in brisbane built mine to suit the power expected and it still survives after 2yrs of abuse.
No off the shelf one will cope with alot of power as most only increase the clamp pressure by 30% , with a turbo you could expect 80% increase so they just don't add up.
Nup not telling
you'll have to find out yourself

yeh i don't really care if it's a button or not. i've driven heaps of cars with them and i don't mind them. i just don't want the clutch to slip!

how scarey are the custom clutches price wise? i've emailed DCS so be interesting to see what they say.

Thanks

since you flat out refuse to search.

how about giving some real info about the car and how it will be used.

No point in button clutch if it has to move any sort of weight.
you'll wear it out fast, they don't like to be slipped at all.

Just an observation I have always found the standard clutch pedal throw to be easy on the left leg. I have driven some heavy clutch work cars over the years and after a full day in the office my left leg felt like it had done a work out.

I know the standard Mav has a power assisted clutch but does increasing the clutch pressure plate clamping ability have any affect on the clutch throw and feel?

G'day,

i run a excedy sports tuff clutch in my supercharged GQ (runs10 psi) its only about 4 weeks old now but handles the power and feels good under the foot.

Just my 2 cents

I have replaced my clutch with a heavy duty one from a local engine rebuilder. This is ment to be a good clutch but i am not convinced with it.
I have recianty replaced the clutch in my xr8 falcon with a unit from KB clutch engerneering (0247321692). when it turned up it didnt look that exciting, not a button or anything. When i installed it the pedal pressure required was way less than the heavy duty one i had just replaced but i took it for a drive and at 20kmh i dumped the clutch in 4th and it instantly stalled the engine. I have had this clutch for almost a year now and it is the best thing i have ever had. Great bite and a soft pedal. I know its not a patrol or even 4x4 but he knows what he is doing and designs the his clutches to suit your requirements. the falcon clutch was cheaper than a heavy duty one thru an auto parts store.

hey brad,

i'd tow the occasional trailer with it but i know that you can't slip button clutches at all.

unless there's some magical clutch that will let me slip it all day and then won't spin when i'm giving it stick i'll get that one

looks like i'll be getting a cushion button with a heavy press plate.

Thanks for everyones input so far

That was my thought untill i got this clutch in the falcon. It has different ratio fingers on the pressure plate which means it retains the soft pedal while increasing the clamping pressure 2 or 3 times that of a factory presure plate

I'v got a custom made to my rig running TB42@15 psi with a Hays street strip 11 inch pressure plate, just drilled the fly wheel to fit with a TD42 turbo clutch plate. Had to sleeve down the slave cylinder to 5/8 inch bore to get the throw right. This thing has 27 000 pounds of clamp pressure, drop the clutch on this one and the engine will do a 360!
